Discover Leavenworth through its specific places: trails on Blackbird Island and in Waterfront Park, facilities in Enchantment Park, and the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery on Icicle Creek. Wildlife viewing, outdoor recreation and local history each offer a different focus. As you plan your stay, consider which of these themes you’d like to shape your outings.
River Trails and Parks
Waterfront Park is on the Wenatchee River, a few blocks from downtown Leavenworth. The sports fields at Enchantment Park connect directly to trails through the scenic recreation area of Waterfront Park. This trail system links two named park areas while allowing each to retain its own focus.
Enchantment Park has two softball fields, one of which is lighted, as well as a junior baseball field that also serves as a youth soccer field. Other features include a pump track, a skate park and a playground. In winter, the park’s trails and restrooms remain open for walking and cross-country skiing.
On Blackbird Island, the River Trail, Channel Trail and Hot Sands Trail lead to Hot Sands Beach and across the Enchantment Bridge to the Enchantment Park system. The trails have named destinations along the water and connect to the park system. You can also float down the Wenatchee River through Leavenworth on an inner tube.
For a tubing trip, you can put in at Icicle Bridge and take out at Barn Beach or the East Leavenworth boat launch. These locations offer possible starting and ending points for a trip described as a river float through Leavenworth.
Wildlife Viewing and Fish Hatchery
The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is on Icicle Creek. Visitors can see the hatchery, adult fish holding ponds, a fish ladder, raceways and rearing ponds in the original buildings. The hatchery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This brings fish-rearing facilities and a specific historical connection together in one place.
The Icicle Creek Nature Trail is one mile long, mostly paved, and equipped with interpretive signs and numerous benches. Its length, surface and amenities offer several points to consider when working the trail into your day’s plans.
Birdwatching also varies by season: birds can be observed at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery year-round, while the Birding Bench Trail is accessible from April through November. This lets you distinguish between a year-round viewing opportunity and a seasonally accessible trail.
Local History and Winter Activities
In the early 1960s, Leavenworth’s leaders changed the city’s appearance to attract visitors. Front Street Park has a gazebo and a maypole. During Oktoberfest, traditional Bavarian melodies ring out from the Gazebo Stage in Front Street Park; the festival program may change. The history, park and event offer different cultural points of interest, but are not the same kind of visit.
The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club operates three facilities in the Leavenworth area. They include an alpine ski area with two rope tows, a magic carpet, a tubing hill and a sledding hill, as well as snowshoe and fat-bike trails and 26 kilometers of Nordic trails. The options include alpine activities as well as trails for other winter pursuits; the facilities are in the Leavenworth area.
When planning your trip, it helps to organize these differences around your preferred focus: park trails and facilities, birdwatching, a look at fish rearing, or local history. Seasonal conditions vary from place to place: the trails and restrooms at Enchantment Park remain open for walking and cross-country skiing in winter, while the Birding Bench Trail is accessible from April through November.
