Discover Rockingham through its distinctive historic ensemble: the Rockingham Meeting House, its cemetery, and its hilltop setting overlooking the Williams River Valley. The building’s history, the community’s past, and the surrounding landscape give the place a clear focus. Other activities in the town are located in the Village of Bellows Falls and offer a different emphasis.

The Meeting House and the Village’s History

Construction of the Rockingham Meeting House in Rockingham Village began in 1787 or 1788 and was completed in 1799–1801. It is considered the best-preserved 18th-century public building in the state of Vermont. It is also still used for public and private gatherings. Both its construction history and its continuing use are part of what makes this place distinctive.

Historic Rockingham Village grew up around the Meeting House at the geographic center of the Town of Rockingham. Until about 1825, it was the town’s principal village and was located on Meeting House Road. The historic village landscape includes about half a dozen former residences and the Grange Hall. These details expand the story beyond the history of a single building to include the Village’s former role.

Hilltop Setting, Valley Views, and Cemetery

The Rockingham Meeting House and its cemetery stand on a nearly rectangular, four-acre property on a small, steep hill overlooking the Williams River Valley. The cemetery is behind the Meeting House and is the Town of Rockingham’s first permanently established cemetery. It contains more than 1,200 gravestones.

The Meeting House, cemetery, and surrounding grounds are considered important visual and social evidence of early community life in Vermont. Their historical significance therefore lies in more than the building alone: the burial ground and the site overlooking the valley are also part of this historic landscape. Together, these features make Rockingham particularly interesting to travelers who want to explore architectural history alongside the history of a community.

Other Places in the Town

Bellows Falls is also part of the Town of Rockingham; the activities mentioned there are located in the Village of Bellows Falls. Walk the Rock includes a scavenger hunt through downtown shops and restaurants, as well as five hiking and biking trails in the Village. This gives visitors two different ways to explore: downtown and trails on foot or by bike.

The Frank Adams Grist Mill is in Riverfront Park at 20 Mill Street in Bellows Falls. Check its seasonal opening dates for 2026 before your trip. When planning, keep the locations distinct: historic Rockingham Village grew up around the Meeting House, while the trails, scavenger hunt, and mill mentioned here are in Bellows Falls.
