Torrey is a gateway to Capitol Reef National Park. The town is also shaped by its designated dark skies, the history of its pioneer community, and regional offerings. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip: roads and landscapes, the night sky, local history, or seasonal experiences.

Roads and excursions around Torrey

Scenic Byway 12 ends near Torrey at the junction of SR-12 and Highway 24; Torrey lies west of this junction. The Capitol Reef Scenic Drive is also near the town: the paved road is 8 miles long and suitable for passenger cars. These two roads offer different kinds of excursions: the byway runs to the junction near Torrey, while the scenic drive provides an option for a drive in the surrounding area.

Guided hikes are another option. Waterpocket Adventure Company offers tours from Torrey in Capitol Reef National Park. Guests are picked up in Torrey for the private tour to Cathedral Valley. Confirm tour availability before booking. This lets you choose between a drive on a paved road and a guided hiking option, without planning them as the same excursion.

Dark skies as a distinct travel focus

Torrey is Utah’s first International Dark Sky Community and follows strict lighting measures to minimize light pollution. The clear mountain air and dark skies offer spectacular views of the Milky Way. Along with its roads and hikes, Torrey offers another distinct reason to plan a trip: the night sky is one of the town’s defining features. If this appeals to you, Torrey is a place whose lighting measures are specifically designed to preserve dark skies.

Pioneer history and Main Street

The Torrey Log Church/Schoolhouse was completed in 1898. In Torrey’s pioneer community, settled in the 1890s, it was both the first church building and the first school building. Its historical significance is also connected to Mormon meetinghouses and tabernacles from 1847 to 1936, particularly their early and settlement phases. The completion date of this individual building and this longer historical period mark two different points in time.

Torrey Gallery is also housed in a pioneer home on Main Street. Large cottonwood trees, about a hundred years old, line the same street; Torrey Canal supplies them with water. Historic buildings, Main Street, and the canal’s water supply are therefore distinct facets of the town’s history.

Regional offerings and seasonal experiences

Etta Place Cidery is a bar and taproom in Torrey. It makes cider and mead from its own orchards. Offerings include tours, patio seating, and a retail shop. Confirm visitor arrangements in advance. The cidery combines beverages made on site with several offerings for visitors.

Torrey Apple Days is an annual summer festival held on the first weekend in July. The 2026 market featured local crafts and art, gifts from regional makers, and food trucks. Check dates and market offerings again for future events. Nearby, the historic Fruita district also offers seasonal fruit picking in its orchards. A reservoir near Torrey offers swimming and lakeside picnicking. So, in addition to offerings in town, you can choose a seasonal orchard experience or activities on the water.
