At Hatch, Mammoth Creek and the Sevier River meet; the town also tells the story of its settlement beginning in 1872. Hatch is located on US-89 between Panguitch and Long Valley Junction. When choosing a hotel or another type of accommodation, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay primarily on local history, outdoor destinations, or regional road connections.

Traces of the Early Settlement

Hatch was settled in 1872 by Meltiar Hatch along the upper Sevier River, near the point where Mammoth and Asay Creeks meet. The first school was in the Hatch family home; Abram Workman was the teacher there. After settling in the area, Meltiar Hatch also operated a water-powered sawmill. These milestones tell the story of the town’s early years from different perspectives: schooling and lessons on the one hand, and the use of water power on the other.

In the last decade of the 19th century, the Hatchtown Dam was built along the upper Sevier River. It failed around 1899 or 1900; the flood swept away several houses near the stream and other property. The dam failure marks a later chapter in the town’s history, and the date is approximate.

Location and Outdoor Destinations

For orientation, Hatch is located on US-89 between Panguitch and Long Valley Junction. Along the regional route, Highway 89 south of Hatch continues toward Zion National Park and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This places the town both in terms of its location on the highway and the route heading farther south.

Nearby Mammoth Cave is one of Utah’s largest lava tubes. In the summer months, its passages extend for more than 2,200 feet; access to the cave may vary seasonally. Nearby Paunsaugunt Plateau in Dixie National Forest offers a different focus: it is a destination for hiking and impressive views. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

The Sevier River in the Hatch area offers opportunities for fishing. Fishing regulations and access conditions may change; check current conditions before your visit. ATV riding is also possible in Hatch, although outdoor conditions and route access may vary seasonally. An older notice identified Pass Creek Road as an access route for OHVs. Check the current road status and applicable restrictions before setting out.
