Along the Mississippi Flyway, Obion County is home to more than 100,000 geese and 200,000 ducks each year. This birdlife shapes the region’s natural character; protected areas, riverbanks and seasonal opportunities for observation give it a variety of facets.

River Bottomlands and Birdwatching

Three Rivers WMA covers 1,577 acres in Obion County and borders the Obion River. The area is characterized by early successional habitats, with large areas undergoing reforestation. Prairie Warblers, Field Sparrows and Common Yellowthroats are common there in summer. Sightings may vary by season, and wildlife conditions also depend on the river’s water level.

To find your way to Three Rivers WMA: The main entrance is on the west side of the highway, right by the Obion River; the easiest access is via Hwy 45W/5. From Union City, visitors can travel south; from Kenton, north. Check current access and management conditions before visiting.

A larger protected area is Obion River WMA, which spans Obion, Weakley and Gibson counties and covers about 8,500 acres. Comparing their size puts the two areas in context: Obion River WMA is considerably larger than Three Rivers. Both areas are part of a landscape where rivers and designated wildlife areas are an important part of the nature experience.

A birdwatching location for the Cerulean Warbler is also designated in the region: Reelfoot Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Obion County. The species can be observed seasonally, so a sighting on any one visit is not guaranteed.

Reelfoot Lake in the Wider Regional Context

Reelfoot Lake is a landmark beyond Obion County. It lies in Lake and Obion counties in Tennessee and Fulton County in Kentucky. Most of the lake is in Tennessee; at 10,427 acres, it is the state’s largest natural lake. It can be reached in less than 30 minutes from most places in Obion County. Fishing, hunting, camping and wildlife watching are among the activities associated with the lake.

Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge was established to manage the upper third of Reelfoot Lake as a protected area for migratory birds. The refuge’s history and the designated observation locations complement one another without answering the same question: one concerns the protection of migratory birds, while the other identifies a named place to observe a particular species.

Stories, Theater and Collections

The historic Capitol Theatre stands in downtown Union City. Built in 1927, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The local Masquerade Theatre group later acquired and renovated the building, turning it into a performing arts venue. The construction date and its later use tell two different chapters in the building’s history.

Kiwanis Park also brings together history and community events: a fountain was reinstalled there in 1897, and the park serves as a venue for weddings, birthday parties and larger community events. Union City’s parks and recreation system operates approximately 250 acres of recreational facilities. These include picnic areas, walking trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and a model airplane field.

Discovery Park of America is a 100,000-square-foot museum in a landscaped heritage park in Union City, Tennessee. Another kind of historical collection can be found at Dixie Gun Works: The company was founded by Turner Kirkland in 1954 and has a 46,000-square-foot showroom with thousands of historic firearms. The Old Car Museum features 36 fully restored classic cars, historic agricultural engines and more than 1,000 mechanical devices.
