Panther Creek State Park sits on Cherokee Reservoir in the historic Holston River Valley. The water and valley give the landscape a distinctive setting, while hiking is a major attraction here. The park has 17 hiking trails covering more than 30 miles in total. Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find an extensive trail network that can be a focus of a trip to Hamblen in its own right.

Trails, Disc Golf and Park Life

Cherokee Park offers another way to enjoy the outdoors: its par-62 disc golf course welcomes beginners and tournament players alike. The trails at Panther Creek State Park and the disc golf course offer different experiences—longer explorations on foot on the one hand, and a game with a clearly stated course rating on the other.

Fred Miller Park brings several amenities together in one place. The 18.5-acre park is near downtown and includes the trailhead for the Turkey Creek Greenway, a walking path and a climbing wall. There is also a splash pad, a playground, pavilions and the Hughes Amphitheatre. Along with exercise on the Greenway, visitors can choose from other outdoor activities and event spaces in the park.

For an idea of the region’s location: Morristown lies along the East Tennessee Crossing National Scenic Byway, US Highway 25E. Morristown and Hamblen County are also about an hour’s drive north of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This distance is a general travel guide; it complements local discoveries with a sense of the wider area.

History from Museums to Memorial Sites

The General Longstreet Museum is the centerpiece of the Civil War Trail in the Lakeway area. The historic Nenney House, where General James Longstreet lived during the winter of 1863–64, gives the site a direct connection to Civil War history. The museum hosts several living history events each year, bringing history to life.

Bethesda Church also has a direct connection to the Civil War: it served as a hospital for wounded soldiers from both Union and Confederate troops. About 80 unknown soldiers are buried in Bethesda Cemetery. The church and cemetery tell two sides of the same era—the care of the wounded and the remembrance of those who fell.

The Crockett Tavern Museum offers a different historical perspective. It is a replica of Davy Crockett’s childhood home and displays objects from that period. From May through October, it is listed as open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check these details before your visit.

Arts, Culture and Event Dates

The Rose Center for the Arts is housed in a Victorian schoolhouse. The center includes an art gallery, classes, musical performances and a sales gallery. The Rose Center also hosts the Mountain Makins Festival, celebrating Appalachian culture and folk life. Alongside the historic sites, art and regional culture offer discoveries of their own.

Events bring a variety of highlights to the calendar. The Morristown Strawberry Festival takes place every year on the third Saturday in May; its program includes arts and crafts, food trucks, children’s activities, entertainment and strawberries. The Sky Mart Arts Crafts & Makers Festival is held on the fourth Saturday in April along Main Street, with arts and crafts, food trucks and entertainment.

The Morristown Craft Beer Festival takes place on the fourth Saturday at the Downtown Green and farmers market pavilion. Regional craft beers are the main attraction, along with continuous entertainment, a children’s area, arts and crafts, a cornhole tournament and food. If you’d like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance.
