Explore Elizabethton through notable buildings and trails with historic significance. The Covered Bridge in downtown spans the Doe River; at Sycamore Shoals, offerings range from an interpretive museum to a certified trail segment. This provides a variety of options for your stay, including architecture, local history interpretation, and outdoor recreation.

Buildings with a history of their own

The Covered Bridge in downtown Elizabethton spans the Doe River for 134 feet and was built in 1882. It is listed in the Historic American Engineering Record and the National Register of Historic Places. Its size and riverside location make the structure a tangible landmark for anyone interested in the city’s architectural heritage.

Carter Mansion was built by John Carter in 1780 and is the oldest timber-frame house in Tennessee. Sabine Hill in Elizabethton adds an example of Federal-style architecture in Tennessee. Its colorful, architecturally detailed interior creates a different impression from the Covered Bridge and Carter Mansion: the focus here is on interior design.

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park offers tours of the Sabine Hill State Historic Site throughout the year; availability depends on events. Check the events calendar before your visit.

History and trails at Sycamore Shoals

An interpretive museum and a film at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area explore the history of the site and the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. A certified trail segment at the site passes the Watauga River ford area, the muster field, and a reconstruction of Fort Watauga. On September 25, Sycamore Shoals was one of the most important muster sites for the Overmountain Men. Here, you can encounter history both in the museum and film and at the trail’s named points of interest.

On foot: historic landmarks and a paved trail

The Linear Park Trail is six miles long and paved. It begins at Eastside Elementary School and ends at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. There are picnic tables, benches, and bike racks along the trail. Its length, surface, and endpoints give this trail option a different character from a visit focused on the historic sites at Sycamore Shoals.

For a self-guided exploration of historic landmarks, take the Downtown Elizabethton Walking Tour. Brochures are available at the Elizabethton/Carter County Visitor Center, and there is also a virtual guide. Unlike the Linear Park Trail, this tour focuses on navigating between historically significant landmarks.

The Watauga River

The section below Wilbur Dam begins in Elizabethton; its lower portion is designated as a Trophy Stream. The Watauga River offers opportunities for trout fishing, rafting, and kayaking. Alongside historic places and trails, you can also enjoy activities on the river.
