Carroll County offers experiences centered on water, culture and history. The 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake offers opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming and camping. Historic theaters, museums and a performing arts center offer further perspectives. You can tailor your explorations to your own interests—from time outdoors to performing arts and local history.
Lakes and outdoor activities
Carroll County’s 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake offers a variety of activities on the water. The park grounds on the northeast side of the lake include a boat ramp, beaches, picnic tables, a pavilion, restrooms and concessions. Facilities may change; check which amenities are currently available before your visit.
Carroll Lake also offers opportunities for fishing and picnicking, as well as easy hikes. Carroll Lake Golf Club adds to the recreational options with an 18-hole public golf course that has been in operation since 1961. Together, these offerings showcase different ways to enjoy the outdoors: time at the lake, easy hikes or a round of golf. Which ones you plan depends on what you feel like doing during your visit.
More outdoor experiences
Carroll County Shooting Sports Park has facilities for trap, skeet, shotgun, archery, rifle and pistol shooting across 72 acres. Since opening in 2013, the park has hosted numerous corporate outings, league shooting events, and state and regional tournaments. This offering adds a distinctive option alongside activities at the lakes.
Southland Safari is a 125-acre wildlife park with nearly 500 animals representing more than 50 species. Animal numbers may change. For visitors interested in wildlife, the park offers another area of interest alongside water, golf and shooting sports.
Performing arts and history
The Dixie offers concerts, comedy, theater, classes, holiday programs and educational programs. As the official Welcome Center for Huntingdon, it also provides local information and offers free tours during regular business hours. Business hours may change, so it’s best to check them before your visit.
The tour of The Dixie includes memorabilia, photographs and personal items from the stage and film careers of Dixie Carter and Hal Holbrook. This brings performing arts and the history of both artists together under one visit theme. The Dixie is therefore of interest both for its programming and for a tour with a local connection.
The Court Theatre also has its own historical timeline: the building dates to 1920 and was converted into a theater in 1929. The Court Theatre has been in operation since 1929. These two dates offer a concrete point of reference if you’re interested in the town’s architectural and cultural history.
The Carroll County Museum preserves local history and holds memorabilia from Billy O. Williams and Dixie Carter. The Gordon Browning Museum and Genealogical Library is a public museum and archive for documents, images and artifacts related to the history and culture of Carroll County, Tennessee. It also displays memorabilia from Governor Gordon Browning’s term in office. The collections offer insights into different aspects of local history.
Festivals in Huntingdon and McKenzie
Arts and crafts are part of the program at the Huntingdon Heritage Festival. Food vendors are featured at the Sweet Tea & Southern Pickin's Festival in McKenzie.
