At the South Dakota State Capitol in the Pierre area of Hughes County, different forms of art and architecture come together: scagliola columns, stained-glass windows, statues, and works of art shape the building. You can explore the Capitol through its specific details, not just its function as a building. The grounds also include Capitol Lake and a walking path.

History and Culture in Many Forms

The Trail of Governors traces a distinct path through South Dakota’s political history. Life-size statues of all former governors line the route from the State Capitol grounds to downtown Pierre on the Missouri River. The route connects the Capitol grounds with another part of the city, while the figures give the path a clear historical theme.

The Pierre Hill Residential Historic District tells the story of the city from another perspective. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places under ID 98000075. Its areas of significance are architecture, community planning and development, and transportation. The listing is therefore about more than individual architectural styles: the development of the residential area and the role of transportation routes are also among its designated themes.

The South Dakota State Historical Society Museum focuses on the history and cultural heritage of South Dakota. Its collections, exhibits, programs, and events offer a variety of ways to explore these subjects. The South Dakota National Guard Museum has a particular historical focus: it preserves artifacts, memorabilia, and historical documents related to the National Guard’s activities from the late 19th century through more recent peacekeeping missions. Both institutions are dedicated to history, but their subjects range from a broad view of South Dakota to the experiences and missions of the National Guard.

Other interests lead to different discoveries. The South Dakota Discovery Center offers hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Waterfront Gallery for the Arts is a venue for artists from the region and across South Dakota. In this way, hands-on learning and art sit alongside the historical themes, without requiring the same kind of visit.

Trails, Wildlife, and Scenery along the Missouri River

LaFramboise Island Nature Area on the Missouri River combines trees and meadows with habitats for a variety of wildlife and bird species. Hiking and biking trails add to the outdoor experience. The island’s history also stretches further back: on their return journey in 1806, Lewis and Clark spent the night there and named the island Bad Humored Island. The historical name and the area’s present-day description offer two different perspectives on the same place.

The Oahe Downstream Recreation Area offers several activities. Three campgrounds provide opportunities for boating, hiking, and disc golf. In winter, birdwatchers can observe bald eagles resting below the dam. There is also an interactive prairie butterfly garden near the main entrance, featuring 17 native prairie plant species. Depending on your interests, you can focus on recreation, winter birdwatching, or the garden’s plants.

The Oahe Dam Visitor Center also offers several specific views: of Lake Oahe, the dam’s intake structure, and the Missouri River. In the broader regional context, Lake Oahe stretches for more than 230 miles from Pierre, South Dakota, to Bismarck, North Dakota. Highways 1804 and 1806 pass by most of the Lake Oahe recreation areas between these cities. This regional scale adds another dimension to the individual nature and cultural themes.
