At the Memorial Arch in Ipswich, the story reaches far beyond the town: The origins of the arch date back to November 11, 1918, when the armistice was signed; it was built in memory of those who fought in World War I. Stones from around the world and from every U.S. state were brought together for its reconstruction. Calcite crystals from the Badlands are also part of the arch. This monument thus combines remembrance with a collection of different rocks.

Homes and Memorial Sites in Ipswich

Another glimpse into local history awaits at the J.W. Parmley Historical Home and Museum. The building was constructed in 1919 as J.W. Parmley’s original home. Cherry paneling runs throughout the house; two stone fireplaces contain stones and seashells from around the world, collected by Parmley on his extensive travels. These details tell the story both of the home’s architecture and of the collection incorporated into its design.

The Marcus P. Beebe Memorial Library is also associated with a personal remembrance: It was dedicated as a memorial on August 21, 1931, by the children of Marcus P. Beebe. Unhewn granite from the surrounding prairies of the Dakota Territory was used in its architecture. The Memorial Arch, the home, and the library represent different forms of remembrance—in a structure, a collection, and the choice of building material.

Preserving rural architectural history is the focus at Ipswich Pioneer Village. The Ipswich Flower and Garden Club founded the Village in 1969 to preserve historically significant rural buildings. The Powell School was the first building; a replica of the Congregational Church was also donated in 1976. This progression shows how a single schoolhouse became a site with additional historic buildings.

Architectural History in Roscoe

Roscoe Community Hall was built in 1934 and played an important role as the town’s community center. Over the course of its history, it served as a theater, meeting place, gymnasium for the local school, roller-skating rink, and public dance hall, among other uses. Its brick façade, decorative pilasters, and front window openings are among its original features that remain. The rectangular brick building has a barrel-vaulted roof. The hall connects architectural history with the many different purposes the building once served.

Nature and Trails at Mina Lake

Outdoor activities take center stage at Mina Lake Recreation Area. Visitors can fish and observe wildlife, and trails wind through the scenic surroundings. The Shake Maza Trail at Mina Lake is three-quarters of a mile long. The recreation area is 12 miles west of Aberdeen and can be reached via U.S. Highway 12.

Camping options at Mina Lake Recreation Area include 37 electric campsites, a tent campsite, a camping cabin, and a modern cabin. Accommodation availability may change, so check current availability before your trip. The historic sites and Mina Lake offer a clear thematic contrast: In Ipswich and Roscoe, buildings and memories shape the experience, while at the lake, the focus is on observing nature, fishing, and trails.

Events Throughout the Year

Ipswich Trail Days takes place each June. The program includes a rodeo and mutton busting; food vendors are also set up downtown during the festival. Dates and program details may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before your trip. Mina’s annual Mina Lake Freedom Festival features live music and fireworks over Mina Lake. It also includes a Community Freedom Parade. Check the latest date and program before making plans.

Another event tradition in Edmunds County is Christmas in the Courthouse, held every year since fall 2005. Together with the events in Ipswich and Mina, it offers another seasonal connection to the region without requiring a particular travel itinerary.
