The five-mile River Walk, a downtown Historic District, and a collection of more than 5,000 objects showcase three distinct sides of Belle Fourche. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between an outdoor activity, a historical focus, and a specific event date. A distinctive monument and a disc golf course add other clearly defined topics to this selection.

City History and Regional Collections

The Belle Fourche Commercial Historic District is downtown. The Historic Tour starts at the Belle Fourche Public Library and is just over a mile long. The Tri-State Museum has a regional focus: the 4,000-square-foot historic museum is municipal and operated by the city. It covers early pioneer history as well as the rodeo and Old West history of western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and southeastern Montana. The collection includes more than 5,000 objects, including rodeo memorabilia, historical documents, antiques, collectibles, and fossils. Its range of topics therefore extends beyond rodeo, combining regional history with a variety of object types.

Compare the River Walk and Historic Tour

The River Walk is a five-mile paved trail for walking and cycling. It highlights the city’s scenic beauty and the waterways that gave it its name. Its route is therefore longer than the Historic Tour, which is just over a mile long. Interpretive signs line the entire River Walk; a map is available at the Center of the Nation Visitor Center. If you plan to use the map, check in advance whether it is available.

Monument and Disc Golf Course

The Center of the Nation Monument is a 21-foot-wide, compass rose-shaped monument made of South Dakota granite. It is surrounded by the Avenue of Flags, which includes the flags of all 50 U.S. states as well as the national flags of the United States and Canada. At the Center of the Nation Disc Golf Course, the focus is on the individual holes rather than history and symbolism. The course starts at 415 Fifth Avenue in Belle Fourche. Every hole is par 3; lengths range from 152 to 367 feet. The par remains the same, while the hole lengths vary.

Rodeo and Dinosaur Tours

The Black Hills Roundup is one of the oldest continuously held outdoor rodeos in the United States. During the five days around the Fourth of July holiday weekend, it brings visitors to Belle Fourche. If you want to plan your trip around the rodeo, check the specific dates. Another activity is the Dinosaur Dig Site Adventure Tours by PaleoAdventures, offered to children aged 12 and up. Confirm participation before booking if you are considering this tour for your trip.
