Coventry can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of Washington Village and the recreational opportunities of the Coventry Greenway. Washington Village is one of Coventry’s surviving former textile mill villages. The Paine House stands at 7 Station Street in the village; the South Main Street Historic District lies in its southern part. The Greenway offers 9.2 fully developed miles for cycling, walking, and horseback riding. This gives you a specific choice to consider when planning: should you focus on historic houses and the development of the village, or include a recreational trail that accommodates several activities?

Washington Village and the Paine House

The Paine House is a historic residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It currently operates as a museum from May through October; since seasonal operations may change, check the current schedule before your visit. The oldest part of the house may have been built as early as 1691 by Samuel Bennett. Bennett is known to have operated a sawmill on the nearby Pawtuxet River. The possible date refers specifically to the oldest part of the house, not to the entire residence as a whole.

South Main Street: District and Orientation

The South Main Street Historic District is in the southern part of Washington Village. The district’s contributing buildings date from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. The district itself is elongated and predominantly residential; its development took place in the early and mid-19th century. The buildings’ broad date range and the district’s period of development therefore refer to two different aspects. To understand the architecture, it is worth distinguishing the dates of individual buildings from the development of the district as a whole.

South Main Street is historically significant as a transportation corridor and has been in use since at least the early 19th century. At its northern end, the street forms a T-junction with Main Street (Route 117), the main street of Washington Village. This intersection provides a clear reference point within the village.

The South Branch of the Pawtuxet River was also the site of about six factories in Washington Village. This adds a distinct reference to Washington’s industrial past to the history of its homes and historic district.

Coventry Greenway: Route and Uses

The Coventry Greenway is officially part of the East Coast Greenway. Its first section, between Station Street and Ayoho Road, opened in 1997 and is 1.5 miles long. This figure refers to the first phase; the fully developed Greenway covers 9.2 miles. The opening date and total length therefore describe different aspects of the route: the start of one section and the extent of the developed Greenway. Cycling, walking, and horseback riding are among the recreational activities available. You can choose how to use the trail based on the activity that best suits your plans.
