The 15-county Lumber Heritage Region brings together heritage preservation, recreation, open spaces and education in Pennsylvania; Lycoming County is part of it. Forest areas and trails offer tangible connections to the landscape, while museums, parks and events provide insights into history and culture.
Forests and Trails
Two large forest areas showcase different sizes and routes. Tiadaghton State Forest covers more than 146,000 acres; most of it lies in Lycoming County, while some areas also extend into Tioga, Potter, Clinton and Union Counties. Loyalsock State Forest covers 114,552 acres and extends along Loyalsock Creek. Parts of the forest lie in Lycoming County; overall, it extends across Sullivan, Lycoming and Bradford Counties.
The 45-acre Little Pine Lake is one of the main attractions at Little Pine State Park. Trails with very different distances offer another perspective on the landscape: the historic Pine Creek Rail Trail connects Jersey Shore in Lycoming County with Wellsboro in Tioga County along a 62-mile route. The Susquehanna River Walk, by contrast, is an approximately four-mile paved loop for cyclists and pedestrians. It runs along the levee system in Williamsport, South Williamsport and Loyalsock Township. Surface conditions may vary in winter.
The Jacoby Falls Trail also leads to a specific natural destination: the public trail runs 1.6 miles from Cotner Farm to Jacoby Falls. The waterfall is 29 feet high. The descriptions of a long route connecting two counties, a shorter paved loop and a trail leading to a waterfall bring different kinds of trails and landscape experiences to life.
Timber History and Culture
Along the Timber Trail, interpretive signs, benches and a sculpture point to the region’s logging history. Another historical theme can be found at Muncy Heritage Park and Nature Trail: the 11 acres along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River include areas of historical and ecological significance. The park showcases the history and natural beauty of Penn Port. This commercial and residential area developed in the 19th century amid the flourishing canal industry along the West Branch.
The Muncy Historical Society and Museum of History was founded in 1936. Its mission is to preserve and maintain the rich history and cultural heritage of Muncy and the surrounding communities. This offers a perspective that goes beyond individual buildings or events to encompass local history, including that of neighboring communities.
Museums, Events and Local Insights
At the World of Little League Museum, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Little League International complex and see the venue for the Little League Baseball World Series. At Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, the exhibit gallery follows a winding path through individual climate-controlled habitats. Their features include naturalistic rock formations, trees and live plants.
Art and stage performances are also among the offerings. Williamsport First Friday is an event by Lycoming Arts and a community gathering celebrating the arts. Event dates vary; check them before planning your visit. The Community Arts Center’s program includes music, dance, Broadway, theater, comedy, family entertainment and special events. Individual performances vary.
Another local facet is Today Farm & Market, a 75-acre working farm with a farm store in Muncy. It sells pasture-raised beef, pork, lamb and goat meat, as well as eggs from free-range, pasture-raised chickens. Product offerings may change.
