French Azilum was a planned settlement on the Susquehanna River for refugees fleeing the French Revolution. An original foundation has been excavated there for public viewing. Here, history is not just something you hear about—it also leaves a visible trace on the site.
French Azilum and the River
Admission to French Azilum includes a self-guided tour of the grounds and a guided tour of the LaPorte House. The restored blacksmith shop is also back in operation: live blacksmith demonstrations and classes are usually offered in early June. If you’d like to plan around these events, check the specific dates before your visit.
A new river access point to the North Branch Susquehanna River opened at the historic site on August 13, 2026, providing public access; the opening was reported on August 14. The access point includes a concrete ramp for non-motorized boats. The North Branch Susquehanna River Water Trail extends from New York into Bradford County. Paddling, boating and fishing are possible along the waterway, which also passes historical sites. The North Branch stretch of the river is considered a fishing area for smallmouth bass.
Bradford County offers different ways to experience its river and history: French Azilum tells the story of a planned settlement, while the Water Trail connects on-the-water activities with historical sites. This distinction can help you plan if your interests lean more toward cultural history or toward paddling, boating and fishing.
Museums and Local Stories
The Bradford County Historical Society Museum is located in the former Bradford County Jail in Towanda’s Historic District. Exhibits are on display in the former cellblocks, and the museum also has a genealogical and historical research library. The former jail defines the museum’s setting, while the exhibits and library offer different ways to explore history.
The Tioga Point Museum was founded in 1895 to provide a permanent home for local history and archaeology, as well as art and artifacts from cultures around the world. Its collection includes rare books, samurai weapons and objects from the Pacific region. It also features stone and beaded objects from Indigenous American cultures. This breadth makes clear that local subjects sit alongside collection pieces from many regions of the world.
Music history is also represented: the Philip P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum is located in Rome in the house where Bliss lived. He wrote the music for Horatio Spafford’s text “It Is Well With My Soul.” The Home Textile Tool Museum offers a different kind of collection: it includes a Federal-style house and an English threshing barn. On display are tools for processing flax, a working flax wheel, a loom and a working blacksmith shop.
The Heritage Village and Farm Museum grew out of an effort to preserve old farm equipment from private collections. It has offered programs featuring living history and woodcarving demonstrations. At French Azilum, meanwhile, the settlement’s history, the excavated foundation and the blacksmith shop offer different perspectives on the site. Knapp’s Covered Bridge is 95 feet long, is also known as Luther’s Mills Bridge and Brown’s Creek Covered Bridge, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Landscapes, Views and Trails
Wyalusing Rocks, also called Prayer Rocks, overlooks a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Susquehanna River. Marie Antoinette Lookout offers views of the river, mountains, French Azilum and a French refugee settlement whose construction dates to the late 18th or early 19th century.
Mt. Pisgah County Park covers approximately 600 acres and offers abundant, diverse wildlife. For a drive through the agricultural landscape of Wyalusing and the surrounding area, Quilted Corners of Wyalusing combines country roads with an OnCell audio tour. Those interested in longer bikepacking routes can choose from four routes at Endless Gravel, ranging from 115 to 430 miles; each comes with a day-by-day itinerary. The different distances offer a concrete way to compare the routes without implying a walking or riding time.
