The Boston Flour Mill in Shedd, also known as Thompson’s Mills, is Oregon’s oldest standing water-powered grist mill and a separately listed historic property. It makes a distinctive mark on Linn County, where history can be discovered not only in buildings but also along former transportation routes and in diverse museum collections.

Mills, Museums, and Historic Traces

The Linn County Historical Museum presents its exhibits in Brownsville’s original railroad depot and in six Southern Pacific Railroad cars. Its collections explore the lives, work, and cultures of Indigenous people, Oregon Trail immigrants, Black and white pioneer settlers, and early county families and communities. This offers a perspective that extends beyond a single chapter of regional history.

At the East Linn Museum, historic rooms such as a pioneer kitchen, parlor, and bedroom stand alongside outdoor exhibits featuring equipment and tools from logging, mining, and agriculture. The Moyer House in Brownsville was built in 1881 and restored to its original condition. Traces of history can also be found at Cascadia County Park, where the historic Santiam Wagon Road is visible.

Trails to Waterfalls and Rivers

At McDowell Creek Falls Park, bridges and viewing terraces offer views of Royal Terrace Falls and Majestic Falls, alongside a three-mile network of trails. Fishing and wading are sometimes possible in the pools below the waterfalls. Cascadia offers a different experience: the park is located at the confluence of Soda Creek and the South Santiam River, and a three-quarter-mile trail leads to Soda Creek Falls. The different trail lengths provide a practical guide to how much time you may want to plan for your walks.

The Quartzville Back Country Byway offers opportunities for hiking and exploring. The Quartzville River along the byway also provides opportunities for fishing, swimming, and gold panning. At the North Santiam River, John Neal Memorial Park offers opportunities for fishing and floating. Its trails pass through wetlands and by beaver ponds. Note the boat ramp’s specific restriction: it is suitable only for launching paddle craft.

More river landscapes can be found along the South Santiam River: Waterloo County Park is on its banks, and River Bend County Park has hiking trails and river access. Larwood Bridge is in Wayside Park at the confluence of Roaring River and Crabtree Creek. You can drive or cycle the Linn County Covered Bridge Tour via Highways 20 and 226; check bridge conditions before setting out.

Lakes, Water Sports, and Places to Stay

Whitcomb Creek County Park is located on Green Peter Reservoir near Sweet Home. Activities include birdwatching, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping, and water sports; there is also a boat ramp on the reservoir. Sunnyside County Park is east of Sweet Home, at the northeastern corner of Foster Reservoir. Activities here include water skiing, fishing, and jet skiing, and boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are available to rent. Rental options may vary by season.

Freeway Lakes Park has three lakes measuring approximately seven, nine, and 21 acres. They offer opportunities for fishing and boating. At River Bend County Park, 65 campsites and reservable cabins add to the riverside stay. Since the number of campsites may change, it’s a good idea to check current availability before making plans.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Lebanon Strawberry Festival has been an annual community tradition since 1909. It celebrates Lebanon’s agricultural heritage and the city’s reputation as the “Strawberry City.” The program includes parades, rides, arts and crafts, food vendors, and activities for all ages; individual events may vary from year to year. The Lebanon Downtown Farmers Market offers organically grown fruits and vegetables, as well as canned salsa, pickles, and jams. The mix of vendors may change.

In Brownsville, Stand By Me Day takes place annually on the fourth Saturday in July. The program includes tours of filming locations, competitions, and other activities; check the date before your trip. The Linn County Pioneer Picnic also holds a special place: it is considered Oregon’s longest continuously held celebration.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Linn, start by choosing what interests you most: historic sites and museums, trails to waterfalls, or activities on rivers and lakes offer different ideas for day trips. This makes it easy to shape your trip around the discoveries that interest you most.
