In Yachats, trails and coastal locations vary considerably: the 804 Trail leads from Yachats State Park to a sandy beach 1.7 miles to the north. The Amanda Trail features a challenging ascent and a historic dedication. At other locations, you’ll find views, tide pools, beach access, or forest paths. As you plan, consider which of these features you want to shape your stay.

Coastal Views, Tide Pools, and Beach

The 804 Trail offers sweeping ocean views as well as access to tide pools and pebble-covered coves. Parts of the trail are wheelchair accessible; check the accessibility details again before your trip. This trail brings together a variety of coastal experiences, while its description also provides a specific reference point: the sandy beach north of Yachats State Park.

Whale watching and photography are the main attractions at Smelt Sands State Recreation Site. The site is also known for tide pooling. If you enjoy lingering by tide pools, this coastal location offers a different focus from a trail whose description highlights views and coves above all.

Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site offers a one-mile loop with an especially scenic coastal view. Parking along the loop is limited. From there, you can access a wide stretch of beach that’s ideal for building sandcastles and playing frisbee. The Yachats River meets the ocean here, and anglers can fish from the rocks at the river mouth. Several different interests come together in one place: a loop trail, coastal views, beach activities, and fishing.

Forest Trails and Cultural Connections

The public Gerdemann Footpath crosses a forested, Pacific-facing slope bordering Siuslaw National Forest. The Ya’Xaik Trail runs through lush second-growth forest and connects to the public footpath at Gerdemann Botanic Preserve. Its name commemorates the Ya’Xaik, a group of the Alsea tribe. The two trails therefore have distinct features: the Gerdemann Footpath crosses a Pacific-facing slope, while the Ya’Xaik Trail is described in terms of its forest and the cultural connection reflected in its name.

How to Put the Amanda Trail in Context

The Amanda Trail runs 2.2 miles south on a challenging ascent to the Cape Perpetua overlook. Its northern trailhead is at the southern end of Yachats Ocean Road; from there, a moderate hike of about 1.0 mile leads to the Amanda statue. The distances given refer to different destinations: the statue on one route and the overlook on the other. Check the difficulty and conditions before your hike.

The trail is dedicated to the memory of Amanda, a blind Coos woman who was wronged during the reservation years in the 1860s. In addition to its challenging ascent, the hike has a historical connection through this dedication. When choosing the route, you can therefore take into account both the hiking destination and this part of its significance.

This helps you tailor your search to the focus of your trip while keeping in mind the distinct character of each place described.
