Clinton brings together several distinct reasons to visit: the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum focuses on the history of Route 66, while parks offer nature, fishing and recreational activities. Historic sites also provide a tangible link to the route’s path and the city’s history. For planning your trip, a simple question can help: should the focus be on Route 66 culture, time in the parks, or a combination?

Route 66: Museum and historic route

The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum offers visitors a personal journey through the history of Route 66. It also features rotating special exhibits about the Route 66 experience. The museum is located in Clinton, at Interstate 40, Exit 65. If a special exhibit is a deciding factor for you, check the current schedule before your trip.

The Y Service Station and Café is another historic Route 66 landmark in Clinton. It was built in 1937. Tenth Street ran as Route 66 at this location: Route 66 turned west there, while U.S. Route 183 continued south. The building was designed in the Southwestern Mission Revival style and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Two aspects come together here: the building’s architectural design and the former road layout.

Park activities: nature trail, ponds and train ride

At Acme Brick Park, you can choose between a nature trail and a ride on a C. P. Huntington replica. The nature trail is one mile long and goes around ponds in the park. Two ponds are stocked for fishing. The replica takes visitors on a one-mile ride across a bridge over the lake and through a dark tunnel. Both activities are one mile long, but they offer different experiences: the trail focuses on the route around the ponds, while the ride features the bridge, lake and tunnel. When visiting the park, you can choose between the trail around the ponds, fishing and a ride on the train replica, according to your interests.

More recreation and history at McLain Rogers Park

McLain Rogers Park adds cultural history and mini golf to the mix. The park is home to several historic WPA projects. Its outdoor amphitheater seats 400 and is one of only two surviving amphitheaters of its kind in Oklahoma. The park also has an 18-hole mini golf course. The difference lies in the focus: McLain Rogers combines WPA history, an amphitheater and mini golf, while Acme Brick Park offers a nature trail, ponds and a train ride.

Dining and finding a hotel based on your interests

Local dining options include Route 66 Cafe at The Market, a family-run restaurant serving classic American dishes. Before visiting, it’s worth checking the current menu and opening information.

If you’re looking for hotels in Clinton, first decide whether Route 66 history, park activities or both are the reason for your stay.
