Architecture to Explore at Your Own Pace

The Historic Norman Mobile Tour is a self-guided tour of 23 historic buildings in central Norman; 16 of the sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At each stop, the tour offers audio and written explanations, as well as a map with directions to the location. Those interested in architectural history can explore the stops at their own pace and find their bearings at each one. This way, the focus is not only on the number of buildings and their historic status, but also on the individual sites along the tour.

Art and Stage

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art houses more than 20,000 objects. Visitors can discover French Impressionism, works by Native Americans, Southwestern art, contemporary art and photography. The collection thus brings together very different areas of art without focusing on a single period or form of expression. The Jacobson House Native Art Center offers a different historical perspective: it is based in the historic 1917 home of Oscar and Jeanne Jacobson.

At the Historic Sooner Theatre, different forms of performing arts come together. This historic venue presents Broadway musicals, classic films, concerts and community theater. It also offers summer camps, year-round workshops, and theater, music and stage training for teens and adults. The Firehouse Art Center focuses more on making art: children, teens and adults receive hands-on instruction in painting and ceramics. The center also hosts rotating exhibitions featuring works by local, regional and national artists. Those who prefer to view art can find exhibitions; those who want to work with materials and techniques can explore the instruction and workshops on offer.

Weather Knowledge and Science

At the National Weather Museum & Science Center, historic meteorological instruments and interactive exhibits connect the history of weather observation with weather science. Exhibits include the original Norman Doppler Radar, a T-28 aircraft used for storm research, and Mesonet and Farmbot installations. Since displays may change, it is a good idea to check what is currently on view before visiting.

The National Weather Center at the University of Oklahoma has a different focus: state, federal and academic institutions work together there to study the Earth's atmosphere, improve severe weather forecasting and train future meteorologists. The recurring National Weather Festival is also held there in the fall. The program includes weather balloon launches, drone demonstrations, hands-on activities for children and food trucks; individual activities may vary from year to year.

Water, Trails and Events

Lake Thunderbird is Oklahoma's only urban state park and has 86 miles of shoreline. Its amenities include two marinas, nine boat ramps and two swimming beaches. The park's trails are open daily, extend for four miles and include twelve obstacles. The park brings shoreline, water access and trails together in one natural setting; when planning, you can consider these different areas according to your interests.

The music events also differ in their timing. Jazz in June is an annual three-day festival held in June at Andrews Park, featuring nationally known and local musicians. Food trucks, local arts and crafts vendors, and family-friendly activities round out the program. The Summer Breeze Concert Series runs from May through August on the amphitheater stage at Lions Park and also features national and local musicians. Check the dates of each event before your trip.

Local Markets and Events

The Cleveland County Fairgrounds offer indoor and outdoor facilities for livestock and horse shows, agricultural exhibitions, festivals, markets, concerts and competitions. The Norman Farm Market has a different focus: it supports farmers through educational programs and promotes local and seasonal foods. Together, these offerings show different sides of local life—from larger events and exhibitions to engaging with agriculture and seasonal foods.
