Boone brings together distinctive landscapes and a rich market and mountain history. Since 1974, the Watauga County Farmers’ Market has served as the town’s “Town Square.” Regional vendors offer locally made food, art, music and crafts there. Nature and culture also offer distinct experiences to help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

River Trails, Gardens and Scenic Overlooks

The Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone feature a diverse collection of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Strawberry Hill offers a different view of the town: This historic overlook provides a view of Boone. Along the Greenway Trail, the South Fork of the New River, open meadows and colorful forests shape the landscape; the trail follows the river and crosses it.

The Boone United Trail offers a different focus. It passes through wooded terrain to halfway up Howard Knob and then returns to the starting point. The lollipop-shaped loop is 2 to 2.5 miles long and gains more than 650 feet in elevation. Another natural landmark is “Baby,” a sugar maple recognized as a North Carolina Champion Tree. A path leads up the hill to the tree; it may be one of the largest trees in the state.

Mountain History and Culture

At the Hickory Ridge History Museum, the tour passes through six historic cabins filled with artifacts and furnishings. Traditional skills on display include hearth cooking, spinning, candle making and blacksmithing. Historical interpreters in period clothing also presented everyday life among early mountain settlers there. Another detail of local history is the historic house on King Street: Dr. John Walter Jones built it as a family home in 1908.

For art enthusiasts, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts takes part in the Downtown Boone Art Crawl on the first Friday of each month. Check the dates before planning your visit around it, as event schedules may change. For the fall 2026 season, a concert series with a listening-room atmosphere is planned for the Mazie Jones Gallery. It will feature performances by local and regional musicians and singer-songwriters; confirm the specific dates in advance.

Getting Your Bearings and Practical Differences

The Downtown Boone Local Historic District is roughly bounded by four streets: Straight Street to the west, Queen Street to the north, Appalachian Street to the east and Rivers Street to the south. This approximate boundary helps orient visitors to the historic town center without claiming a precise boundary.

Brookshire Park is located at 250 Brookshire Road and has a parking lot, an accessible picnic shelter and restrooms that are open seasonally. The seasonal restriction applies to the restrooms. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail but are not allowed on the athletic field; check this rule before you arrive. Daniel Boone Park offers special events and a range of family-friendly activities. These places and offerings each have a different focus, from rivers and forests to historical interpretation, markets, art and events.
