In Southern Pines, you can explore natural areas and trails, a historic house and art galleries as different highlights of your stay. Whitehall and Reservoir Park showcase trails and landscapes; the Shaw House and Campbell House offer their own historical and artistic features. When looking for a hotel in Southern Pines, it helps to first decide which of these sides of the city interests you most.

Nature Trails and Landscapes

Whitehall encompasses 157 acres of natural areas that highlight Southern Pines’ native ecosystems, particularly its longleaf pine forest. The area is home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The property is also registered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Safe Harbor Program, which helps protect its natural habitats. Nature lovers will find both a distinct landscape and a connection to the protection of native habitats here.

Southern Pines has more than 12 miles of hiking and biking trails. When planning, it’s helpful to distinguish this citywide total from the details of individual routes: at Reservoir Park, a trail runs for more than 2 miles around the 99-acre Reservoir Lake. Whitehall offers a 2-mile nature trail connected to the Reservoir Park Greenway. These details describe different features: the Reservoir Park trail focuses on its route around the lake, while Whitehall’s trail is notable for its natural setting and connection to the greenway.

Shaw House and Campbell House

The historic Shaw House stands at its original site at the intersection of the famous Revolutionary-era roads Pee Dee Road and Morganton Road, at the southern entrance to Southern Pines in Moore County, North Carolina. The interior also gives the house a distinctive historical character, with fine details on two hand-carved mantels of unusual beauty. It also features outstanding early examples of Moore County pottery and furniture in the simple Pine style. At Shaw House, the history of the site comes together with characteristic examples of local craft and furnishing traditions.

Campbell House, at 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, is a stately home used daily as an art gallery and cultural center. It is surrounded by a 14-acre public park and garden. The Arts Council galleries on the first floor display works by local, regional and national artists in a variety of media. Compared with Shaw House, the emphasis here is more on art and cultural life, while the park and garden also shape the setting of the house.

Events and Information

For the 2026 season, free concerts are scheduled on the Sunrise Lawn on the first Friday of each month, from the first Friday in May through the first Friday in November. If you’d like to include a concert in your stay, check the dates and event details before you travel.

The Southern Pines Welcome Center features historic photographs of the city and provides maps, brochures and other publications about its cultural and recreational offerings. These materials offer a starting point for exploring the city’s various attractions once you arrive.

A concert is another seasonal event to consider. Which of these options matters most to you may help determine your choice of hotel in Southern Pines.
