Cullowhee lies in a scenic valley in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. Two distinct perspectives can help you plan your trip: the history, culture, and environment of the Southern Appalachians, and activities centered on trails and sports. You can first decide whether museums or active recreation should be the focus of your stay.

WCU Trails: Scope and Activities

The WCU Trail System is listed in Cullowhee as a hiking option and includes more than six miles of multi-use trails with narrow, natural-surface paths. It is a resource for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running for members of Western Carolina University and the wider community. You can choose your outdoor focus based on the activity: hiking and trail running are options on foot, while mountain biking offers a different focus.

The distance refers to the trail system as a whole; the description of the paths as narrow and natural-surface gives an idea of their character. Two starting points are a parking lot at the Health and Human Sciences Building and a parking lot at the softball field. Check the trailhead information before you arrive.

Museums: Southern Appalachians and Art

The Mountain Heritage Center is a regional museum dedicated to documenting, researching, and interpreting the rich culture and history of the Southern Appalachians. Its exhibits convey the region’s history, culture, and environment through stories and artifacts. Its scope therefore goes beyond history and explicitly includes the environment of the Southern Appalachians.

The WCU Fine Art Museum is located in the Bardo Arts Center in Cullowhee. Its exhibitions and events are free and open to the public; check the details before your visit. When choosing between the cultural offerings, you can use their subject matter as a guide: the Mountain Heritage Center focuses on the history, culture, and environment of the Southern Appalachians, while the WCU Fine Art Museum offers exhibitions and events.

Sports Facilities: Amenities, Climbing, and Disc Golf

The Cullowhee Recreation Center offers a full-size gymnasium, modern fitness equipment, competition and therapy pools, locker rooms, and saunas. Unlike the WCU Trail System, with its multi-use trails, the Recreation Center brings together several different facilities. Amenities and access rules may change, so check the current conditions before visiting.

Another option is the climbing wall at the Campus Recreation Center. It is just under 50 feet high and has more than 1,500 square feet of climbing surface. The wall accommodates bouldering, top-rope climbing, and lead climbing. The measurements describe the size of the wall; the three disciplines show which forms of climbing are available there. When planning, you can consider wall size and preferred style of climbing as separate questions.

Catamount Links is an 18-hole disc golf course on the Western Carolina University campus. Alongside the multi-use trails and climbing wall, it offers another clearly defined sport to choose from. The types of activities are especially useful for comparing the options: hiking, mountain biking, and trail running on the WCU Trail System; different climbing disciplines on the wall; or disc golf on the course.
