Tarboro combines historic sites with parks and waterside activities. Each place has its own character: a self-guided walking tour leads through the historic district, while Indian Lake Park and Riverfront Park each offer their own opportunities to enjoy nature and recreation. This makes it easy to shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.

Discover History and Culture

The Historic Tarboro Walking Trail is designated a National Recreational Trail. It begins at the Blount-Bridgers House and leads through the largest historic district in North Carolina. The house was built in 1808 and is a National Historic Landmark. The walk therefore combines a specific starting point with a view of Tarboro’s historic streetscape.

The Tarboro Town Common was established in 1760 by the act that created Tarboro as a town. The Edgecombe County Cotton Press, considered the last of its kind in North Carolina, is also located there. North Main Street offers another point of interest for architecture enthusiasts: it is one of the best-preserved and most attractive streets of its kind in eastern North Carolina.

The grounds of Calvary Church also showcase a range of historic features. The walled churchyard is densely shaded by 19th-century trees. The gardens of Calvary Episcopal Church retain their original Victorian-era planting and design. The Pender Museum adds to these impressions with handmade furniture from the Coastal Plain. The building was constructed around 1810 for Silas and Rebecca Everitt.

The Edgecombe County Veterans' Military Museum displays more than 3,500 artifacts, spanning a period from the American Revolutionary War to the War in Afghanistan. The Quigless Clinic-Hospital building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 in recognition of its local historic significance. It began treating patients in December 1946; the two-story medical clinic had 25 beds and served as a hospital. The Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery presents six changing exhibitions throughout the year; the program is subject to change.

Parks, Water, and Events

Indian Lake Park covers 52 acres and includes a 6.5-acre lake stocked with fish. The park therefore combines a specific area of land with a body of water stocked for fishing. The park also has a nature museum. Campsites offer tent sites, water, grills, tables, and restroom facilities. If you’re planning an outdoor stay, you’ll find designated camping facilities here as well as the lake.

Riverfront Park covers 25 acres and includes bald cypress lowlands, landscaped gardens, and trails. A boat launch provides direct access to the Tar River for boating and fishing. The park thus combines trails and landscaped areas with a clearly designated access point for river activities; Indian Lake Park, by contrast, has a distinct focus on the lake.

For a visit that combines culture and food, consider the annual Brewgrass Festival. It features local bluegrass bands, local breweries, and a wide selection of food trucks. Check the event dates before making plans so your visit coincides with the festival.
