Murphy offers several distinct starting points for a trip: the seasonal Farmers Market in the center, historic sites, art classes, and the Murphy River Walk. The River Walk, in particular, offers more than one way to explore: in addition to walking trails, there are canoe routes along two rivers. For planning, it is worth considering dates and desired activities separately. The market follows a seasonal weekly schedule; nature experiences, local history, and art each offer their own focus.

The Farmers Market at the L&N Depot

The Murphy Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from the first Saturday in April through the last Saturday in October. Since its start and end dates are tied to the Saturdays on the calendar, they do not fall on the same dates each year. The market is located at the L&N Depot in downtown Murphy. If the market is important to your travel dates, plan for a Saturday within this period and check the latest market dates and location before your trip, as these may change in the future.

Local History and Harshaw Chapel

The County Historical Museum in Murphy, North Carolina, showcases the history of Indigenous people and pioneer settlers in the far western part of the state. It is a historic stop with two clearly defined themes; Harshaw Chapel, by contrast, focuses on a single building and Murphy’s first Methodist congregation.

Harshaw Chapel is a small brick church in the original Greek Revival style, built in the 1860s for Murphy’s first Methodist congregation. It is the oldest relatively intact building in Murphy. The Chapel is surrounded by a cemetery with notable Victorian gravestones. The building’s construction, its connection to the congregation, and the cemetery offer different points of reference for local history: the church can be understood through its origins and purpose, while the gravestones add to the picture of the surrounding cemetery.

Walking Trails and Canoe Routes on the River Walk

The Murphy River Walk includes about 4 miles of walking trails that pass through various natural habitats immediately surrounding the historic downtown. The River Walk also includes canoe routes along the banks of the Valley River and the Hiwassee River. In summer, when Lake Hiwassee is full, its backwaters extend into these rivers and the adjacent lowlands. The shallow waters offer paddlers opportunities to glide between rivers, inlets, and trees while observing birds, wildlife, and fish species.

The comparison can help you choose: the walking trails have an approximate length and pass through natural habitats around the historic downtown. The canoe routes, by contrast, are defined by the summer fullness of Lake Hiwassee and its shallow backwaters. This makes it possible to choose between the two activities based on your preferred focus, without assuming a specific duration or set itinerary.

Classes at the Valley River Arts Guild

The Valley River Arts Guild offers classes for children, teenagers, and adults. This adds an active arts offering to the historic themes and nature activities. If you would like to include a class during your trip, check the specific dates directly with the Guild.
