Chocowinity brings together architectural and church history. The Historic District highlights homes in a variety of styles; the history of Trinity Church spans its founding as Blount's Chapel and its relocation to a new site in Chocowinity. These offer two clear themes to help you choose a destination, complemented by the annual Homecoming as a specific calendar event.

Residential Architecture in the Historic District

The Chocowinity Historic District includes 17 primary properties on the north and south sides of NC 33, west of its intersection with US 17. Properties on both sides of the road refer to an area along NC 33, not a single building; the intersection provides a useful point of reference for locating it. The homes worth preserving include buildings in the Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow styles, as well as simple vernacular house types from the early 20th century.

For architecture enthusiasts, one point of comparison is the range between the specifically named styles and simpler vernacular residential forms. The latter are explicitly dated to the early 20th century, while the named styles remain distinct architectural points of reference. A 2009 state architectural survey estimated that the District might be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C because of its architecture.

Trinity Church: Name, Location, and Use

The history of Trinity Church begins in 1774 with the founding of Blount's Chapel at Godley's Crossroads. The chapel was later renamed Trinity Church; in 1939, the church moved to a new site in Chocowinity. Its founding location, name change, and relocation mark distinct stages in its history. Since its construction, Trinity Church has been continuously used as an Episcopal place of worship on a weekly basis. Everyone is welcome at Trinity Church.

Trinity School opened in 1851 as a boarding and day school for boys and girls. The two terms refer to different forms of school attendance: a boarding school includes living at the school, while a day school provides instruction without overnight stays. Its opening falls between the founding of Blount's Chapel in 1774 and the relocation of Trinity Church in 1939. These dates mark separate events in the history of the school and church.

Date and Directions

Trinity's Homecoming takes place every year on the first Sunday in October. Unlike individual historical dates, this is a recurring annual calendar day. The day of the week remains fixed, while the specific date depends on the year. If you want to include the event in your travel plans, check the date for the year in question.

The Chocowinity Recreation Complex is located on Highway 33 East in Chocowinity. Together with the location of the Historic District, it provides another road-based point of reference in town.
