Nature, Trails and Water
Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area provides public access to the largest natural heritage area in Alamance County that is considered significant at the state level. At Monadnock Lookout Tower, the view extends 360 degrees around. The two places offer different highlights: one focuses on access to a significant natural heritage area, while the other offers views from the tower.
In southern Alamance County, Cedarock Park covers 500 acres. Shallow Ford offers several ways to enjoy the outdoors, including more than five miles of natural-surface trails. The paddling access offers both take-out and put-in options, with stairs and a boat ramp. Wildflower Meadow and the Observation Deck are also located along Basin Creek Trail.
On the Haw River, Great Bend Park at Glencoe covers 30 wooded acres. The 0.5-mile Island Trail provides access for fishing and paddling, as well as several picnic areas. The park borders historic Glencoe Mill Village, placing natural surroundings and local history side by side. For another route through a park landscape, visit the Arboretum at Willowbrook Park, which has a wide, paved walking path through the 17-acre park and includes an accessible treehouse.
The trails along the Haw River also offer different ways to explore, depending on the activity. The Haw River Trail is part of the state’s Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The Haw River Paddle Trail offers 40 miles for paddling throughout Alamance County, while the Haw River Land Trail includes 20 miles of hiking trails with scenic views of the river and wildlife. These distances therefore describe different ways to experience the river landscape.

The Graham Historical Museum features exhibits, photographs and artifacts about Graham’s history, from its beginnings through the mid-20th century. The Textile Heritage Museum displays early textile machinery, including looms and sewing machines.
The Black Bottom District Walking Tour honors Black history in downtown Burlington and begins at the Downtown Depot. Cedarock Historical Farm explores a different historical theme, offering an example of farm life in North Carolina in the late 19th century. In southern Alamance County, Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre produces historical dramas; its grounds include the Wilson Amphitheater.
More Experiences and Getting Around
Music and art are also among the region’s attractions. Haw River Ballroom is a riverside music venue in the former Dye House in historic Saxapahaw. Alamance Arts is located in a historic home in Graham and offers free craft kits each week. These places have different focuses, from music events to creative activities.
Animal Park at the Conservators Center is home to about 60 animals representing about 20 different species. Tours follow a three-quarter-mile path with an experienced guide; reservations are required. Lake Mackintosh Park and Marina offers sailing and pedal boat rentals. It is also home to a monument commemorating the American Revolutionary War, overlooking the lake.
Visitors can arrange a tour and tasting at Iron Gate Vineyards and Winery. Since schedules may change, confirm the details in advance. For general travel planning, Alamance County is easily accessible via two major interstate highways. Whether you prioritize nature trails, river activities, history or culture, your choice of experiences will give your trip to Alamance its own focus.
