19 waterfalls in one mile: The Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen State Park offers a concise look at one of Schuyler County’s defining natural features. Gorges, forest areas, and trails add further highlights. A public marina, wineries, and auto racing history complement the natural attractions. The scale ranges from a trail through a single park to routes that cross several named areas.

Waterfalls Along Different Trails

The Gorge Trail features 19 waterfalls along a one-mile route. Its seasonal operation may change; check whether the trail is open before your visit. At Havana Glen Park, a hiking trail leads through the gorge to the 41-foot-tall Eagle Cliff Falls. Campsites and pavilions are available in the park. These offer two different perspectives on waterfalls: 19 falls in one mile and a gorge trail leading to a waterfall with a specified height.

Forest Areas and Their Trails

The Finger Lakes National Forest covers 16,212 acres and has more than 30 miles of interconnected trails. They pass through gorges, ravines, pastureland, and forest areas. The forest offers opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, horseback riding, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. The options range from wildlife observation and hiking to activities on a bike, horseback, or snowmobile.

The Finger Lakes Trail covers a different scale: It runs for 48 miles through Schuyler County and passes, among other places, through Sugar Hill State Forest, Watkins Glen State Park, Finger Lakes National Forest, Texas Hollow State Forest, and Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area. Here, the focus is not on the length of a single park trail or one waterfall, but on a county segment that crosses several named areas.

Sugar Hill State Forest covers 9,085 acres. Its facilities and trails include the Six Nations Trail System, Finger Lakes Hiking Trail, Sugar Hill Recreation Area, Sugar Hill Fire Tower, and five shelters. The recreation area is the largest designated camping area in the forest. Keep in mind when planning: vehicle access and water service are seasonal and may be affected by maintenance work.

The Catharine Valley Trail offers another highlight: This 12-mile nature trail stretches from Watkins Glen to the EK Birding Trail. At Seneca Harbor Park, by contrast, access to the water takes center stage. The park has a public marina and access to Watkins Glen Pier.

Construction History and Auto Racing

Brick Tavern Museum was built in 1828 and is the county’s oldest brick building. The museum is currently closed for renovations. Auto racing provides a different historical focus: road racing came to Watkins Glen in 1948. Cameron Argetsinger planned a 6.6-mile course for the Watkins Glen Grand Prix. NASCAR has been a fixture at Watkins Glen International since 1986. The years mark different chapters: the arrival of road racing and NASCAR’s later established role.

Wineries and Seasonal Information

Schuyler County is home to more than 40 wineries. The number may change as businesses open or close. Wine is therefore a distinct theme alongside waterfalls, forest trails, and auto racing history. Lawrence Chapel is open seasonally from May 1 through October 15; confirm availability before your trip.
