A 200-acre glacial lake, a 137-foot waterfall and museums exploring canal and Haudenosaunee history: Onondaga brings together nature and culture on different scales. Those who want to discover both will find distinctive landscapes, trails for a range of activities and exhibitions about regional history.

Lakes, Trails and a Waterfall

Beaver Lake Nature Center is a 690-acre park with a 200-acre glacial lake. Two other bodies of water shape the natural landscape at Green Lakes State Park: Round Lake and Green Lake are glacial meromictic lakes surrounded by old-growth forest. Their names and distinctive features give this landscape a specific focus.

At Pratt’s Falls Park, scenic trails lead to a 137-foot waterfall. Its formation is also part of the natural story: the waterfall formed as the glaciers retreated. Meanwhile, Onondaga Lake Park has a linear greenway stretching for more than 8 miles. Its four named trails include East Shore Recreation, Shoreline Walking Trail, Lakeland Nature and West Shore.

Comparing Trails and Activities

Highland Forest offers more than 20 miles of trails that can be used year-round. It also has dedicated winter sports offerings: 40 miles of cross-country ski trails, including 20 groomed and tracked miles and three skating trails. For snowshoeing, there are six trails ranging from 0.5 to 8.7 miles. This makes it possible to distinguish a year-round trail network from specific winter sports options.

Season is also important when choosing activities at Beaver Lake Nature Center: canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are offered seasonally. At the outlet of Onondaga Lake, Onondaga Lake Park has a free, ADA-compliant kayak launch. It is available seasonally from Memorial Day through October 1. If you plan to use the launch, check these dates when planning your trip.

For a broader view of the region, a different scale is also worth noting: Onondaga County has hundreds of miles of interconnected trails. This countywide figure complements the specific trail systems at Highland Forest and Onondaga Lake Park without treating them as equivalent.

Discover History and Culture

Pratt’s Falls Park connects the landscape with a historical reference: in 1796, the park was the site of Onondaga County’s first mill operation. Visitors can take in both a waterfall formed by geological processes and an early chapter in the region’s industrial history.

The Erie Canal Museum presents 200 years of Erie Canal history through indoor and outdoor exhibits. The visit is self-guided; docents are also often available to talk with visitors. The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology offers a different focus: its 35,000 square feet feature interactive permanent and changing exhibitions.

The Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center is a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) heritage center. It focuses on the history of Indigenous people in central New York. Together with the Erie Canal Museum, it offers a cultural perspective on different historical topics; the Museum of Science & Technology adds interactive exhibitions to these discoveries.
