Corfu combines an unusual history of its name with a strong floral culture. Its local past spans a change of place name, the plant and flower trade, and visitors who once came to see the greenhouse gardens. A seasonal farmers market and services at the public library offer practical points of interest for planning a trip.

Local History and Floral Culture

Long’s Corners was named after Dr. David Long and his son John, who came from Massachusetts in 1807. When residents applied for a post office, the name changed; afterward, the place was called Corfu. The story thus links an early place name with the step that gave the town its current name.

In the 1890s and early 1900s, six businesses in Corfu were known for growing and shipping plants and flowers. A Corfu flower show brought 2,100 people to the village in a single day in 1933. In the 1950s and 1960s, people came from across the northeastern United States and from Ontario, Canada, to see the gardens at the Corfu greenhouse operation. The two examples show different reasons for visiting: the one-day flower show in 1933, and the greenhouse operation’s gardens in the 1950s and 1960s.

Seasonal Events and Practical Stops

The Corfu Farmers Market is held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. between July and September at Corfu United Presbyterian Church. Local farmers, food trucks, vendors, and artisans gather there. Unlike the floral history, which spans several decades, the market runs for a limited period; if you want to visit during your stay, plan around this time window. Vendors may vary, and event conditions may also change. Check the date and venue before visiting.

The Corfu Public Library offers Wi-Fi, computer workstations, and printing and fax services. If you rely on any of these services, check their current availability in advance; offerings may change.

A report dated May 27, 2026, describes community-maintained gardens and an orchard at Corfu Homestead Park. The park’s Veterans Memorial includes a large mural; according to the report, the memorial was open to the public at the time of publication. Check access before visiting if you would like to see the mural.
