Bombay is a small town in Franklin County, New York, south of the Canadian border. The town borders the St. Regis Reservation. Two themes offer clear guidance for a stay: Bombay’s history and the wetlands of the Bombay and Brasher State Forests. This way, you can get to know the community through both its development and its landscape.

Wetlands and Habitats

The Bombay and Brasher State Forests encompass more than 4,500 acres of wetlands. These provide important habitat for birds, fish, amphibians, and protected plants. Those interested in wetlands will find a distinct focus on nature here alongside local history. The groups of species mentioned show that these habitats benefit several forms of animal and plant life.

Place Name and Early History

Bombay was originally called Macomb. Michael Hogan named the town in honor of his wife, who was from Bombay, India. The name’s history thus connects the town to his wife’s origins. The town’s formal establishment can also be dated: an act of the New York State Legislature incorporated Bombay on March 30, 1833; it took effect on May 1 of the same year. The date of passage and the effective date mark two different steps in this development.

Museum and Remembrance of the Train Station

One place to learn about local history is the Bombay Museum at 1716 State Route 95. The Bombay Historical Society’s office is located there. The museum preserves local artifacts and historical records and was built as a replica of the former CN train station that stood in Bombay. Local collections and the architectural memory of a former train station thus come together in one place. If you plan to visit the museum, check current contact and operating information in advance.

Pavilion and Other Attractions in Hogansburg

The Bombay Park Pavilion was built in 2015 and provides easy access to the local park. It also has a state-certified commercial kitchen.

Hogansburg is also part of the town of Bombay. There, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino at 873 State Route 37, Hogansburg, NY 13655, offers slot machines, table games, dining, and other entertainment. Its offerings are therefore quite different from the town’s historical and nature-related attractions. Since offerings can change, check the latest information before visiting.

Historical markers in Hogansburg also refer to Eleazer Williams. One points to the “Lost Dauphin” Cottage, where Williams lived and claimed to be the son of Louis XVI of France. Another marker points to his grave. It identifies Williams as an Episcopal clergyman and missionary to Indigenous peoples and describes him as the alleged “Lost Dauphin.”
