Alden offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: learn about the lives of former residents, explore historic buildings, and enjoy outdoor activities. The Alden Heritage Center shows how Alden residents lived, worked, and spent their free time. The Joe Panza Nature Trail winds through about 35 acres in the northern part of Alden Town Park.
Local History at the Heritage Center and Schoolhouse
The Alden Historical Society was founded in 1965 to preserve, share, and promote the history of the Town of Alden and its people. The Alden Heritage Center brings this history to life through a variety of topics. These include photographs and artifacts from Alden’s Black Water Mineral Baths, spanning the period from 1904 to 1965.
The first Black Water bathhouse officially opened on November 21, 1904. Its opening led to the expansion and establishment of many other businesses and activities in the Village and Town of Alden. The bathhouse therefore represents more than a single opening day; it is part of a broader story of local development. The photographs and artifacts on display at the Heritage Center explore this history over several decades.
Another part of Alden’s local history is the Henskee Road Schoolhouse. Built in the 1850s, it was later moved to Alden Town Park. Visits are possible during special Alden community events and by appointment. If you would like to include the building in your plans, arrange a visit in advance or look for a suitable community event.
The Alden Historical Society also holds history programs at the Alden Community Center at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month from September through June. The schedule may change, so check the current event date before visiting.
Nature and Outdoor Activities on the Joe Panza Nature Trail
The Joe Panza Nature Trail is in the northern part of Alden Town Park and runs through about 35 acres. It can be used year-round for nature observation, hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing. Activities range from quiet nature observation to getting active on the trail; it is not limited to just one activity. Horses and motorized vehicles are prohibited on the trail.
Community Programs and Parks
Alden currently has two Town Parks with soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, and concession stands. The Alden Recreation Department offers a year-round recreation program for youth, adults, and seniors. The department uses Alden Town Parks, the Alden Community/Senior Center, Town Hall, and facilities at Alden Central School. The range of locations and age groups offers several ways to take part in the recreation program.
The Town of Alden also runs a six-week summer program for youth. It includes arts and crafts, outdoor games, tennis, dance, drama or theater, and swimming. This limited-time program differs from the year-round recreation program: it is specifically for youth and brings together a variety of activities over six weeks.
