Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a 2,800-acre area in the Delaware River estuary. Its brackish tidal marshland is an important resting and feeding place for migratory birds in spring and fall. These two seasons give the landscape experience a specific connection to birdlife. Visitors can explore the Grassland Trail and Forest Habitat Trail in the refuge. They can also hike, hunt, fish, and take part in special events hosted by the refuge. This brings exploration on named trails together with other activities, while the marshland’s seasonal significance adds a distinct natural highlight.

Rivers, Marshland, and Wetlands

Beyond the refuge, Salem County’s landscape reveals other facets. Salem County has six rivers. More than 34,000 acres of the county are meadows and marshland, along with tidal and freshwater wetlands. Rivers and wetlands thus shape different aspects of the region’s natural environment. Salem County also has a rich maritime heritage, broadening the focus beyond individual landscape types to the region’s relationship with the water.

The Bayshore Heritage Scenic Byway runs along Harrisonville-Lighthouse/Route 632 through Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and along Fort Mott Road/Route 630 to Fort Mott State Park. Different themes come together along this route: the Delaware River estuary and the history of coastal defense. Those who want to take in nature and history together on one route will find a tangible connection between the two here.

Historical and Cultural Discoveries

In Salem County, Fort Mott was designed after the American Civil War as part of a three-fort coastal defense system for the Delaware River. Its origins point to the river’s military importance. Hancock House, built in 1734, offers a much earlier historical reference point. Salem County is also home to sites from the American Revolutionary War and sites associated with the Underground Railroad. The Salem County Historical Society Museum collection includes more than 10,000 objects.

Other cultural themes add their own highlights. Cowtown Rodeo began in 1929 and is the longest-running weekly professional rodeo in the USA. Appel Farm’s Arts Fest features hands-on workshops led by teaching artists, as well as live performances and booths hosted by regional artists. Appel Farm’s South Jersey campus also hosts outdoor concerts and community events featuring local and nationally known artists. Workshops, performances, and artists’ booths offer different ways to discover art, while the rodeo provides a very different cultural focus.

Train Rides and Outdoor Activities

Woodstown Central Railroad offers historic passenger train rides in Salem County. A ride adds a distinct theme to exploring the region: historic trains. Together with the named cultural sites and the estuary landscape, this offers more than a single focus on nature or history.

Parvin State Park has a public boat ramp at Fisherman's Landing. If you include it in your trip plans, check the ramp’s terms of use and any permit requirements before arriving. The public ramp is a specific starting point for visitors planning to explore by boat; any applicable requirements should be checked in advance.
