Thompson Park and Jamesburg’s local history offer different starting points for planning a trip: parks and water on the one hand, historic names and institutions on the other. The park is located in Monroe Township and Jamesburg. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these focuses is more important for your stay.

Park and water: different scales

Thompson Park covers 675 acres. Within the park is Manalapan Lake, which covers 30 acres. The lake is regularly stocked with fish by the State Division of Fish and Wildlife. At 675 acres, the park is considerably larger than the 30-acre lake within it.

Canoeing, kayaking, and small electric-powered boats are allowed on Manalapan Lake; boats with gasoline engines are not allowed. The type of boat is therefore key when choosing a water activity: canoes and kayaks are among the permitted options, as are small electric boats, while gasoline engines are prohibited.

The Thompson Park Dog Park is a dedicated facility within Thompson Park. The off-leash facility covers 2.5 acres and is divided into separate areas for large and smaller dogs.

Church, museum, and historic park names

One historic landmark in Jamesburg is the Presbyterian Church, Jamesburg, New Jersey. In 1853, construction of the church was approved through the election of trustees and the appointment of a building committee. The land on which the church and parsonage stand was donated by James Buckelew. The construction decision and the land donation are two distinct details of its history: one concerns approval of the project, and the other concerns the land for the church and parsonage. Chronologically, the 1853 construction decision preceded the park-related events of 1979 and 2005. These dates refer to different steps: approval of the church’s construction, designation of 1.75 acres as Green Acres Park, and the later naming of the site as Buckelew Park.

Lakeview is another point of reference in the area’s history. A Heritage Guide published in 2019 describes Lakeview as Jamesburg’s museum, maintained by the Jamesburg Historical Association.

The year 1979 is also significant to the history of Lakeview and the surrounding area: when the Borough of Jamesburg acquired the site, 1.75 acres were designated as Green Acres Park. Another historical detail concerns the name Buckelew Park. By resolution, the Borough of Jamesburg named the site Buckelew Park on August 9, 2005. The dates refer to different events: the acquisition and designation in 1979, and the later naming by resolution.
