Explore Mt Holly through its historic buildings and institutions, art, and activities on the water. Rancocas Creek flows through the town, and seasonal visiting hours apply at the John Woolman Memorial. When planning, it’s worth matching your desired activity with its specific conditions.
Visiting Hours at the John Woolman Memorial
From March through November, the John Woolman Memorial welcomes visitors on the first, second, and third Sunday of each month, from 1 to 4 p.m. Visits at other times are available by appointment. Tours in December, January, and February are also offered by appointment.
If you want to visit the Memorial, schedule your visit during these hours or arrange a visit outside the regular time window. Check the visiting hours before you travel so the seasonal schedule fits your plans.
Historic Sites and Their Distinctive Connections
Mill Race Village is in Mt Holly’s oldest neighborhood; its buildings date from the late 17th century. Visitors can shop at artisans’ and business owners’ shops in the restored historic buildings. The connection to history is evident both in the age of the buildings and in their present-day use.
The Historic Prison Museum in Mt Holly was designed by Robert Mills and is a National Historic Landmark. St. Andrew’s Graveyard was established in 1742. The two sites offer different historical points of reference: the museum is notable for Robert Mills’s design and its Landmark designation, while the cemetery is notable for its founding year.
The Burlington County Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences was founded in Mt Holly in 1860. It has since served as a center for ideas and as a place for culture, technology, and natural history. Alongside the older buildings and the cemetery’s history, it adds an institutional role in culture and natural history to the town’s varied historical perspectives.
Art at the Warden’s House Gallery
The Warden’s House Gallery is the permanent home of the Hugh Campbell Collection and exhibits works by emerging artists. This adds a connection to a collection and a look at artistic work to the town’s history. The gallery program may change; check what is currently on display before your visit.
Rancocas Creek and Paddling Options
Rancocas Creek flows through Mt Holly. Rancocas Pathways offers kayak rentals and guided paddling tours, including routes that take in the Mt. Holly Oxbow. If you’re planning a tour, check reservation requirements and conditions before you travel. This lets you plan this activity separately from the fixed or appointment-only visiting hours at the Memorial.
The offerings appeal to different interests: Mill Race Village combines historic buildings with shopping, while the Gallery exhibits art and Rancocas Pathways offers paddling tours. If your visit focuses on history, you can also consider the Historic Prison Museum, St. Andrew’s Graveyard, and the Lyceum, each with its own historical or institutional connections.
