Sunapee borders Lake Sunapee and Mount Sunapee. It also has a historic harbor, places to walk, parks and sites that bring different chapters of local history to life. You can shape your stay around what interests you most: scenery, outdoor activities or cultural history.
Lake Sunapee and Outdoor Trails
Sunapee Harbor offers public access, a boat ramp and public parks. Views of Lake Sunapee can be enjoyed from the harbor and the beaches. A self-guided tour of the historic harbor uses the CLIO app and includes maps, old and current images, and historical information. This lets you pair views of the lake with a closer look at the harbor’s history. If you plan to take the tour, remember to use the CLIO app.
The Riverwalk makes for an interesting, scenic stroll. Coffin Park, a scenic and historic retreat, lies along the Sunapee Riverwalk. Tilton Park offers something different: it is home to the only free 9-hole disc golf course in Sunapee. A walk along the Riverwalk and a round of disc golf are two distinct ways to spend time outdoors.
Local History and Culture
Several sites offer different perspectives on Sunapee’s history. Hames Park recalls the history of hames manufacturing in Sunapee. The Sunapee Historical Society’s collection includes artifacts from the town’s grand hotel and steamboat era. Exhibits on Sunapee’s history are on display at the Sunapee Archives. The collection and exhibits thus offer different ways to explore the past: one features artifacts from a particular era, while the others focus on the town’s history.
The Livery is the last surviving large commercial building from Sunapee’s steamboat era. Today, it is used for performances and art exhibitions. It brings together a notable historical connection and a present-day cultural use, while its history extends beyond its former function.
Plan for Music and Events
In summer, a music series is held at the Ben Mere Bandstand every Wednesday evening. The specific seasonal program may change; if the series is important to your trip, check the latest program details. The Town of Sunapee Recreation Department hosts the annual Great Watermelon Derby. Be sure to check the dates for your planned stay separately.
When looking for hotels in Sunapee, it helps to first consider what matters most on your trip: should a walk, an event or exploring local history shape your stay? The sites and activities mentioned offer different ways to do that. If a seasonal program or event date is essential, confirm it before planning your trip.
