A quarter of Carroll County lies within White Mountain National Forest. The county is also home to two erratic boulders that rank among the largest in the world. The landscape thus ranges from forested areas to individual geological features.

Forests, Rocks and Water

A one-mile drive leads to the top of 700-foot-high Cathedral Ledge. The road provides direct access to the summit; as road conditions can change, check them before you set out.

White Lake State Park is on the shore of White Lake, a typical glacial lake. A well-maintained footpath leads around the lake, and trout fishing is also possible. The loop trail and fishing give a visit different focuses, without requiring you to plan several activities in one place.

Swimming and picnicking are possible at Echo Lake State Park. Several hiking trails start there, including a scenic path around the lake. This means water activities and trails are side by side at Echo Lake, while White Lake is also described as a destination for trout fishing.

Trails and Rides

The Conway Branch is a 21-mile trail from Route 28 in Ossipee to West Main Street in Conway, passing through several points of interest. Ossipee and Conway are both in Carroll County. The stated distance and two endpoints give the trail clear orientation without specifying a particular visit duration.

At the Conway Scenic Railroad, you can choose between two different time frames: the Valley Train is an authentic, one-hour ride on a historic branch line. A round trip through Crawford Notch takes 4 to 4.5 hours. Schedules may vary. The classic North Conway Station is also part of the Conway Scenic Railroad and adds to its historic railroad setting.

In Wolfeboro, the Wolfeboro Branch Recreational Rail Trail starts downtown, opposite the Back Bay of Lake Winnipesaukee. The Millie B offers a different perspective on the lake: its one-hour ride departs from the Wolfeboro Town Docks and travels on Lake Winnipesaukee. Schedules and weather-related restrictions may vary.

Discover Cultural History

The Lucknow Estate covered 6,300 acres and is designated a National Historic Landmark. The designation was announced in December 2024. Castle in the Clouds offers tours of the historic Lucknow Mansion, its lawns and gardens. This brings together a sprawling historic estate and a specific opportunity to explore it.

The Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm combines a historic site with a working farm. Its features include exhibits, gardens and walking paths. This makes the site a combination of agriculture, exhibits and time outdoors, rather than focusing solely on a museum experience.

The Wright Museum is a nonprofit educational institution that honors the contributions and enduring legacy of Americans from the World War II era. A rotating exhibit from its vehicle collection features tanks, half-tracks, Jeeps and motorcycles. Other exhibits use toys, posters, household furnishings and other everyday objects to show how ordinary Americans lived during the war. Comparing vehicles with everyday objects offers two different ways into the same era; the vehicle collection exhibit rotates.

Practical Visitor Information
