Carson City offers different ways to explore Nevada’s history: the Capitol, museums, and a trail through the historic district. There’s also Kings Canyon Waterfall, west of downtown. The attractions vary in form, too, which is useful when planning: from opening hours and exhibition topics to a longer route through the district and a short hike to the waterfall.

Capitol and Museums: History from Different Perspectives

The Nevada State Capitol is in the center of Carson City and is the second-oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check the opening hours before you arrive. This helps you fit a visit to the building into your plans without confusing the stated hours with those of other attractions.

At Battle Born Hall, the Trailblazing Nevada exhibition explores the state’s history across five exhibition areas. Its thematic arc spans prehistory and the mining boom, statehood, early Carson City, and Nevada in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition opened to the public in October 2018 as a free museum on the second floor of the Capitol building.

The Nevada State Museum is housed in the former Carson City Mint building, where coins were minted from 1870 to 1893. Another exhibition, Nevada’s Changing Earth, includes a walk-through Devonian sea and focuses on geology. The museum therefore highlights different aspects of the city’s history than the Capitol: coin minting and the history of the Earth complement the political and chronological view of Nevada.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum collects, preserves, and interprets locomotives, rail vehicles, artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia relating to Nevada’s railroad history. Its focus differs from both the Capitol’s themes and the minting history of the former Mint. Those especially interested in railroad history will find a fitting focus here.

Another historical point of reference is the Historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City: it opened in 1862, before Nevada became a state. The date places its opening before Nevada’s statehood.

The Kit Carson Trail Through the Historic District

The Kit Carson Trail is a 2.5-mile route through Carson City’s historic district. Its stops include 19th-century Victorian homes, museums, and churches. The route brings together several types of historic places in a single walk through the district. Those who prefer exploring history along a trail rather than through a single exhibition topic will find a different perspective on Carson City here.

A printed map of the Kit Carson Trail is available at the Carson City Visitors Center, 716 N. Carson Street. It provides practical guidance for the route.

Kings Canyon Waterfall: A Short Hike from the Trailhead

Scenic Kings Canyon Waterfall is a 25-foot cascade, a five-minute drive west of downtown Carson City. From the Kings Canyon Trailhead, it’s a short 0.25-mile hike. Parking is available at the trailhead, and the route is clearly marked.

The distance details refer to different sections: the five-minute drive describes the waterfall’s location west of downtown, while the 0.25 miles refers to the hike from the trailhead. Compared with the 2.5-mile Kit Carson Trail, this hike is considerably shorter. This makes the difference between a route through the historic district and a short walk to a natural attraction clear, without assuming a connection between the two routes.
