Kearney’s park and recreation trail network spans 26 miles, alongside museums ranging from Nebraska art to historic buildings. You can shape your trip around culture, history or outdoor activities. The trails vary in length and type, while each museum focuses on a distinct subject. Specific examples range from the 13.2-mile hiking and biking trail between Fort Kearny and Cottonmill Park to collections devoted to art and classic automobiles.

Trails, Water and Landscapes

The municipal park and recreation trail network includes 26 miles of historic and community trails, paved walkways and several trailheads. Its connections reach parks, residential neighborhoods, shopping areas, schools and attractions throughout the city. One designated route is the Fort Kearny hiking and biking trail: it runs 13.2 miles to Cottonmill Park and crosses both branches of the Platte River. This gives you both a citywide trail network and a route with a specific distance to use as a planning guide.

The nature trails are suitable for mountain biking and hiking and pass through rolling hills, prairie and wooded areas. At The Archway, hiking and biking trails let you explore the wooded area north of the attraction. The 2.3-mile Kearney Water Trail offers a different way to get around: it is a kayak route through Kearney. Two whitewater features were added there in spring 2022. Use is free, and the typical season runs from April through October. Check conditions before setting out.

Parks and Their Distinctive Features

Cottonmill Park has a 43-acre lake. A barn features a variety of interpretive displays and animals to see. In Yanney Heritage Park, the 80-foot-tall Gottschalk Tower overlooks the park lake. The park also has an amphitheater, splash pads, playgrounds, a marina and flower gardens. These different features offer concrete pointers when deciding what kind of park visit to include in your plans.

Art, Vehicles and Regional Culture

The Museum of Nebraska Art, or MONA, offers tours of Nebraska art, its permanent collection and current exhibitions. Confirm tour availability before your trip. The museum also has an outdoor sculpture garden with works from the permanent collection. Expanded gallery spaces host rotating exhibitions and presentations from the collection, giving you the chance to see both works on permanent display and changing exhibits.

The American Automobile Experience displays more than 125 domestic and international classic automobiles, along with memorabilia. Since vehicles rotate, the scope of the collection may change. The Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center preserves Nebraska’s firefighting heritage and teaches fire prevention and fire safety. The museum rotates selected fire vehicles each October; check dates before visiting.

The Frank Museum also has a regional focus: its exhibitions, tours and programs explore the history and culture of central Nebraska. The Kearney Area Children’s Museum focuses on interactive experiences for play, exploration and discovery; its exhibit offerings may change.

History in Exhibits and the Cityscape

The interpretive center at Fort Kearny features exhibits on the fort’s history, as well as an 18-minute film. During the Sandhill Crane migration, it serves as a Crane Information Center; the timing of the migration varies from year to year. If you’d like to combine your trip with birdwatching, this seasonal connection is a helpful planning consideration.

The Archway presents detailed exhibits, family activities and educational programs about 170 years of westward migration. It also shows what a cross-country journey on the Lincoln Highway was like in 1913. The Trails and Rails Museum includes the Loup River Freighters Hotel, the District No. 1 School House, a Livery Barn, a Log Cabin and a working blacksmith shop. In the Bricks District of Downtown Kearney, murals and local shops line the historic streets. Each of these places offers a different way to explore history—from migration and road travel to buildings and today’s cityscape.
