Hysham brings together a distinctive cultural complex and clearly defined landscape features: the Yellowstone River borders the city to the north, while gently rolling hills stretch out to the south. In town, the Yucca Theater and Manning Residence are part of the Treasure County 89'ers Museum complex.

Cultural History Around the Yucca Theater

The Yucca Theater is a notable example of Mission-style architecture in Montana and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brothers David and Jim Manning built it in 1931. The theater and Manning Residence are part of the Treasure County 89'ers Museum complex, bringing together three closely connected elements of local cultural history.

The Treasure County 89'ers Museum opened in 1989 in a renovated former drugstore on Elliott Avenue, Hysham's main street. Its exhibits include fossils and dinosaurs, cover topics related to the Crow, and include an exhibit about astronaut Frank Borman. A restored soda fountain from the former drugstore is used on special occasions.

The dates provide a timeline: the theater was built in 1931, while the museum's history began in 1989 in the repurposed drugstore. This complex therefore brings together a theater from the Manning brothers' era and a museum established later.

Access to the theater for museum visitors was available by request. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether a request can currently be accommodated. To reach the Yucca Theater, take the Hysham exit from I-94, then Frontage Road and Elliott Avenue.

River Landscape and Recreation Destinations

In the area around Hysham, the Howrey Island Recreation Area covers about 592 acres managed by the BLM in the Yellowstone River floodplain.

A concrete path about three feet wide is part of an accessible nature trail there. The former loop ran from the parking lot through the picnic area to the Yellowstone River and back; flooding washed away part of this loop. Before your visit, check which trail sections are currently usable.

Public recreation areas around Hysham offer access to fishing. Amelia Island Wildlife Management Area is about one mile north of town, and Isaac Homestead Wildlife Management Area is about seven miles west. Both distances are approximate; their different directions help you locate the areas.

The natural features answer different planning questions: Howrey Island combines a riverside setting, picnic area, and nature trail, while the note about the washed-away section of the former loop is important for route planning. Fishing opportunities generally refer to public recreation areas in the surrounding area. Amelia Island and Isaac Homestead, in turn, can be distinguished by their approximate distance and direction. This can help you weigh a specific riverside recreation area, fishing opportunities, and the geographic locations of the two Wildlife Management Areas when planning your trip.
