In Terry, historic route connections and the nearby Badlands landscape offer a range of discoveries. The town focuses on architectural and cultural history, while colorful cliffs and erosion formations shape the surrounding landscape. When planning your trip, you can focus on historic sites, an excursion to the Badlands, or a visit during the Prairie County Fair.
Historic Routes and Buildings
The Yellowstone Trail passes through Terry. Its route runs from Mildred through Fallon and continues west to Miles City. The Lewis & Clark Trail also passes right by the town. Both trails are distinct historical route connections. The Powder River Depot in Terry is a state-protected Montana landmark.
Another notable structure is the Old Milwaukee Bridge. The one-lane bridge was restored by volunteers and is still used by motor vehicles. Check current crossing conditions before driving across. For reference, Terry lies at the junction of old Highways 10 and 253, not far from Interstate 94.
Museum and Evelyn Cameron
The Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery was established in 1975 in the historic State Bank of Terry building, which dates to 1916. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Seasonal changes are possible; check opening hours before your visit. Visits outside regular opening hours or outside the season can be arranged by contacting the museum in advance.
The work of Evelyn Cameron is another cultural connection to Terry. Based in Terry, Evelyn Cameron Heritage, Inc. promotes Cameron’s work. An Englishwoman, she documented life on the frontier with her camera and daily diary entries. The organization owns more than 900 original historic photographs by Cameron. They depict the American West, its people, landscapes, and events.
The Nearby Terry Badlands
In the Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area, colorful banded cliffs meet rolling prairie. Wind and water erosion shaped sandstone bridges, pinnacles, mesas, and buttes. Nearby, visitors can hike, hunt in the backcountry, collect rocks and fossils, and experience the Badlands landscape. A visit to the area is therefore quite different from the town’s focus on cultural and historical heritage.
The Natural Bridges Trail is within the area; the hike to the natural bridges is a little over one mile long. Access to the trailhead via the Calypso Trail requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The Calypso Trail is a 5.5-mile unpaved road leading to the area and is impassable when wet. The hike’s length and the road access conditions are therefore two separate points to consider when planning your visit.
An August Event
The Prairie County Fair takes place in Terry every year on the first weekend in August. The program includes exhibits, entertainment, and food. If the fair is the reason for your trip, plan around this recurring time of year and check the specific dates for that year. This gives you a specific event to plan around, while the historic routes and Badlands area offer other focuses for your stay.
