Deer Lodge offers a stay with several distinct historical themes: cattle ranching, prison history, vehicles, mining, and architecture. When choosing a cultural destination for your trip, you can decide based on the focus that interests you most. Outdoor activities also vary: the Nature Trail is for wildlife watching, while the Big Gulch Trail offers a moderately difficult hike with a set route and elevation change.

Ranch History and Trails

The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site near Deer Lodge covers 1,500 acres and illustrates the development of cattle ranching on the northern plains from the 1850s to more recent times. It was once the headquarters of a 10-million-acre cattle empire. The acreage figures refer to two different scales: the Historic Site and the former empire. This connects the specific ranch to a much larger history of cattle ranching.

For nature observation, the Nature Trail offers the chance to watch numerous birds and other wildlife. The Big Gulch Trail, by contrast, focuses on a moderately difficult 2.3-mile round-trip hike, with about 120 feet of elevation gain or loss. When choosing between the two activities, the main difference is the type of outing: wildlife watching on the Nature Trail or a moderately challenging hike on the Big Gulch Trail.

Prison History and Collections

Another historical highlight is the Old Montana Prison: on July 2, 1871, it received its first inmate as the Montana Territorial Prison. The Old Montana Prison Complex houses five unique museums within its historic prison walls. The Old Montana Prison offers guided and self-guided tours of the Cell House and the Maximum Security area. This brings together institutional history and tour format: the date of the first inmate marks the beginning, while you can choose between a guided and self-guided tour.

The collections also have their own highlights. More than 200 vehicles are on display at the Montana Auto Collection. The Powell County Museum presents local history and includes a mining exhibit. This offers distinct thematic perspectives: vehicle history and local history focused on mining.

Architecture and Town Stories

The Rialto Theatre was built in 1921 in the Beaux-Arts style of a “movie palace” and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is used for local school performances and concerts. The Deer Lodge Walking Tour offers a different perspective on the town: it gives you the chance to see historic photographs and hear the stories behind Deer Lodge’s buildings. The two approaches to local history therefore differ: one focuses on the architecture and present-day use of a single theater, the other on historic views and the stories behind the buildings on the tour.

The Old Montana Prison is on Main Street in Deer Lodge and can be reached via I-90 at exits 184 or 187.
