Explore Kalispell through its city history, museums, and trails. An approximately two-hour walking tour passes historic buildings, while paved multi-use trails offer additional opportunities for walking and cycling. When looking for a hotel in Kalispell, it may help to first consider whether you’re mainly planning to explore culture and architecture or spend more time outdoors.

Historic Buildings and Museums

The Conrad Mansion preserves the Charles Conrad Family Estate, built in 1895. Tours are offered year-round and take visitors through the 26-room building. A visit offers a chance to explore the history of the estate.

The Glacier Art Museum also connects art with a building’s history: it is housed in a Classical Revival-style building originally constructed as the city library in 1903. The permanent collection includes art and culture of Glacier National Park. The Discovery Gallery offers hands-on activities for children; the activities vary with the changing exhibitions.

The Northwest Montana History Museum features eight permanent exhibits and two rotating exhibits about the region’s diverse history. One exhibit also explains how Kalispell became a cultural, economic, and transportation hub in northwestern Montana’s Flathead Valley. Together, the museums offer different perspectives, from art and park culture to the development of the region and the city.

City History on Foot and by Bike

The Downtown Kalispell Walking Tour takes about two hours, covers approximately one mile, and follows level paths. It starts and ends at the Northwest Montana History Museum, includes more than two dozen stops, and features over 30 highlighted buildings. The tour is accessible in accordance with ADA standards. It’s a compact way to combine historic architecture with a museum visit.

The Parkline Trail covers a different distance: this two-mile paved multi-use trail runs through downtown and three historic districts. It is intended for walking, cycling, and pushing strollers. For a longer route, the Great Northern Historical Trail offers a 22.6-mile paved trail between Somers on Flathead Lake and Kila, which also passes through Downtown Kalispell. The trail supports year-round activities such as walking, cycling, running, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Compared with the approximately one-mile walking tour, the two trails are easy to distinguish by their stated lengths.

Parks, Events, and Local Life

Woodland Park offers a walking path and ponds with wildlife, as well as a playground and skate park. Pavilions and gardens can be reserved. Depot Park, meanwhile, is Kalispell’s main park for concerts and events. The “Picnic in the Park” concert series takes place there in summer, along with other events. If you’re planning for a specific date, check the event calendar.

The Kalispell Farmers Market has been around for more than 50 years and is a gathering place for local farmers, ranchers, artists, and craftspeople. They sell their goods, showcase their skills, and connect with the community. Since the seasonal schedule may change, check market days before your trip. Museums, urban trails, and parks offer different ways to spend your days in Kalispell, from exhibits and architectural history to outdoor activities and seasonal events.
