Rockaway Beach connects its current fishing appeal on Lake Taneycomo with its history as a summer resort. Lake Front Public Park has a fishing pier; the dance pavilion, cottages, and boat docks tell the story of earlier chapters in the town’s history. This combination is a helpful starting point when choosing a vacation rental: you can decide whether fishing or the resort’s history will shape your view of Rockaway Beach. Fishing and resort history offer different ways to experience the town.

Fishing on Lake Taneycomo

Lake Taneycomo is primarily a trout fishery. Rockaway Beach Access provides access to the lake; Lake Front Public Park has a free fishing pier that is fully ADA-accessible. This makes it possible to consider the character of the water and the specific fishing facility as two distinct aspects. If fishing is one of your travel interests, the lake’s classification provides the thematic context, while the park pier identifies a specific place to visit.

History as a summer resort

Rockaway Beach was founded as a summer resort by Willard Merriam. The first dance pavilion was built in 1919; it stood on the lakeshore at the eastern end of Bathing Beach Island. The first group of cottages built by the Merriams for rental is now known as the “Brookside Bungalows.” The early resort history therefore includes dancing and recreation by the water, as well as cottages built specifically to be rented.

Historic travel and boating recreation

Historically, visitors traveled by land and water: tourists took the Missouri Pacific Railroad to Branson or Hollister and then traveled by boat across the lake to Rockaway Beach. This sequence distinguishes the railroad destinations, Branson and Hollister, from the subsequent trip across the water to the resort. The Sammy Lane Boat Line is also part of this history. It established its dock at the then-location of Rockaway Beach; the dock was known as “Vass' Dock.”

The Sammy Lane boat was equipped with its own dance floor in the 1920s and 1930s. This gives us a specific detail about entertainment on these historic trips: the journey across the lake was combined with dancing aboard. Patterson Boat Dock was intended for pleasure boats, canoes, water skis, and paddle boats. While the dance floor characterizes the excursion, the dock represents several historic recreational uses of the water.

For planning a trip, it helps to distinguish between the different periods. Current information about Lake Taneycomo and the pier answers the question of how the town relates to fishing; the former connections and facilities tell the story of how tourists arrived and what kinds of entertainment and water recreation were part of the resort’s history. This way, you can plan a current stay around fishing and view the town’s historical development as a separate perspective on Rockaway Beach.
