The Plaza Hotel is a distinctive starting point for exploring Trenton’s architectural history: it was built between 1929 and 1930 and is considered the city’s only example of Art Deco style. The original hotel included a theater, a ballroom, beauty and barber shops, a café, and air-conditioned guest rooms. Its mix of uses at the time brought social spaces, services, and accommodations together under one roof. Its construction period, architecture, and former uses thus tell different sides of the city’s history.

Buildings and History

The Grundy County Museum comprises three buildings: the Main Building, the Baker School Building, and the Annex Building. They include a preserved one-room schoolhouse and a Flat-Iron building. The different building types give the museum several architectural points of interest. It also displays military memorabilia spanning the Civil War through modern times. This timeline covers several eras of military history.

Another point of interest is the Thompson House. Built around 1834, it is the oldest building in Grundy County. Together with the three museum buildings, it offers different ways to explore local and architectural history: from a single early residence to a museum complex with a schoolhouse and a Flat-Iron building.

Landscapes at Poosey Conservation Area

Poosey Conservation Area spans Grundy and Livingston counties. Its landscape features fern-covered rocky bluffs, wooded hills with oak and hickory trees, and expansive grassy areas. Rock formations, dense tree cover, and open meadows create distinct landscapes within the area. Visitors who include nature in their travel plans will find a different focus here than in the area’s architectural and museum history.

Events and Seasonal Markets

Main Street Trenton’s annual Sip & Stroll combines wine tastings and snacks with shopping at participating businesses in the spring. Spring dates and participating locations may change; check the details before planning your visit.

The Five Points Festival takes place annually in August in downtown Trenton. The program includes bounce houses, food trucks, vendor booths, shopping, family-friendly activities, and a cornhole tournament. Since the program may change, it’s worth checking the date and offerings before your visit. The two events offer different highlights throughout the year: Sip & Stroll combines tastings and shopping, while the festival brings together a wide range of activities and booths.

The Main Street Trenton Farmer's Market takes place on Saturdays from May through September. It offers produce, baked goods, handmade items, and local foods. Its regular day of the week and seasonal schedule make it another opportunity to include a market visit in your travel plans. Check the schedule for the year in question before you arrive.
