Nearly four acres of plants, flowers and vegetables give the Horticulture Display Garden at the West Central Research & Outreach Center its distinctive character. This educational and inspiring garden experience combines plantings with research by several plant-breeding companies from around the world. Visitors interested in horticulture will encounter not only a variety of plants here, but also plant breeding.

Gardens, Prairie and Wetlands

The Pomme de Terre Overlook offers a different landscape experience: The 15-acre prairie sits on a rise and affords views across the Pomme de Terre River valley. Informational signs are placed throughout several themed garden areas. Landscape and interpretive information are thus both part of a visit here, while the Horticulture Display Garden focuses on plants and horticulture.

The Morris Wetland Management District broadens the focus on nature. It includes 249 waterfowl production areas spread across eight counties, totaling 54,307 acres. The district aims to restore and protect wetland and grassland habitats for prairie wildlife, especially nesting waterfowl. It also provides places for public recreation. These figures refer to an area spanning eight counties, describing a larger natural region than a single overlook or garden.

Art and History in Morris and Stevens County

In downtown Morris, the Prairie Arts Center is a gallery operated by the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance. The organization runs it to create opportunities to experience art in Stevens County. Museums offer another way to explore regional history: The Stevens County Historical Society Museum building was originally constructed in 1905 as a Carnegie library. The Stevens County Museum displays letters, tools, photographs and handmade objects. They document the development of agriculture, industry, education and cooking in the region.

History can also be discovered along the Stevens County Barn Quilt Trail. More than 100 barn quilts are scattered across the county, and you can explore the trail on your own by car, bicycle or on foot. The Wadsworth Trail was established in 1864 and played an important role in the early settlement of Stevens County. Gager’s Station was located along it, serving as an important gathering place with a trading post, post office and blacksmith shop. The District 63 Schoolhouse offers programs and holds an open house during the Stevens County Fair each August.

Routes and Dates for Planning Your Trip

The Walking Tours in Stevens County follow a specific timeframe: Each tour includes about ten sites and takes 45 to 60 minutes on foot. You can also complete the routes by bicycle or car. This differs from the Barn Quilt Trail as described here, whose distinctive feature is that it can be explored independently using three different modes of transportation.

If you are interested in local food, the Morris Area Farmers Market offers another point of interest. The 2026 seasonal schedule listed the market every Thursday from June through September at Morris Public Library Square. It supports locally produced food and the people who grow and make it. For later seasons, it is worth checking the dates again. Visitors to the University of Minnesota Morris campus will find ample free parking at the edge of campus.

Each place has its own focus: plants and breeding in the display garden, prairie and river views at the overlook, art in Morris, and history along the trail and at the museum. You can plan your trip around the subjects that interest you most, keeping in mind the stated timing and visitor information for walks and seasonal offerings.
