Duluth offers several ways to shape a stay: the Lakewalk on Lake Superior, natural areas, cross-country ski trails, and railroad history. These themes appeal to different interests and involve different types of routes. When planning, it is worth considering distances and geographic details in relation to the specific place; not every distance in miles describes the same type of route.

Lake Superior Shoreline Trail

Duluth’s Lakewalk is a paved trail for pedestrians and bicycles that is nearly eight miles long. It extends from Canal Park to Brighton Beach in Kitchi Gammi Park and runs mostly along the shore of Lake Superior. If you choose a clearly defined trail as your main focus, its surface, permitted uses, and endpoints provide concrete points of reference.

Kitchi Gammi Park is at the eastern end of Duluth and was established to ensure public access to Lake Superior. Brighton Beach in the park is also the end of the Lakewalk. The park thus connects a specific trail endpoint with the purpose of public lake access.

Parks, Natural Area, and Cross-Country Skiing

Magney-Snively Park is in western Duluth, above several residential neighborhoods; Kitchi Gammi Park is at the eastern end of the city. Magney-Snively covers 728 undeveloped acres and was designated Duluth’s first natural area in 2002. Unlike the linear Lakewalk, this is a park area: miles and acres answer different questions and should not be compared as equivalent measurements.

For cross-country skiing, the City of Duluth maintains 30 miles of trails among Magney Snively, Piedmont, Chester, Hartley, and Lester-Amity parks. The network lies within the city limits. Another 42 miles of the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) run within Duluth.

The trail lengths are not directly comparable: the ski trails connect five named parks, while the 42 miles of the SHT refer to its route within the city limits. When choosing an outdoor focus, the type of route and its geographic scope therefore matter alongside the number of miles. The Lakewalk, in turn, is a paved trail for pedestrians and bicycles. These distinctions help place cross-country ski trails, a hiking trail, and a lakeshore route in context as different options.

Railroad History and Other Places

The Lake Superior Railroad Museum is located in downtown Duluth. It preserves the history of railroading, interprets it, and educates the public about it. The museum’s mission thus encompasses both historical preservation and interpretation and public education.

The North Shore Scenic Railroad operates on a 28-mile route between Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. Together, the museum and the railroad represent different connections to rail: historical interpretation at a downtown location and a route with two named endpoints. If you are interested in railroads, you can distinguish between the museum’s historical focus and the route’s geographic scope.

Enger Park is also home to the American-Japanese Peace Bell. It adds another specifically named point of interest in Duluth alongside the railroad-related attractions.
