Explore Two Harbors through three historical themes and practical ways to enjoy the water: the Two Harbors Light Station dates back to 1892, the Depot Museum traces railroad history, and the Dwan Building tells the story of 3M’s early years. There’s also a shoreline path at Two Harbors Protected Access and a section of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. You can shape your stay around the subject that interests you most: lighthouse and architectural history, railroads and industry, or outdoor trails.
Harbor and Railroad History
The Two Harbors Depot was built as the headquarters and passenger station of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Depot Museum has 4,000 feet of exhibit space. It sits across from the harbor, at the site of Minnesota’s first iron ore shipment. The depot brings together two aspects: the building’s original role as a railroad headquarters and passenger station, and the site’s historical connection to iron ore shipments. This makes transportation and industrial history a clear focus for planning your visit.
3M History at the Dwan Building
Another way to explore the town’s history is to visit the Dwan Building. The 3M Birthplace Museum is located in the original Dwan Law Office Building. The Dwan Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and opened as a museum presenting 3M’s early years. While the Depot Museum’s former role connects it to the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad, the museum in the Dwan Building focuses on 3M’s corporate history. For the 2026 season, the 3M Birthplace Museum is closed for repairs. Check the current seasonal notice before your trip if you’re planning a visit.
The Two Harbors Light Station
The Two Harbors Light Station was built in 1892. Self-guided tours include the lighthouse tower, the assistant keeper’s house, the pilot house, and the fog signal building. This makes the tour about the station as a whole, not just the tower. Its focus differs from the railroad and corporate history of the depot and the Dwan Building. Check the Light Station’s seasonal operating information before your visit.
Shoreline Path and Trail
Two Harbors Protected Access has an accessible kayak launch and an accessible fishing pier, as well as a footpath along the shore. Operations and accessibility may change, so check the facility’s current status before your visit.
The 0.9-mile section of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail in Two Harbors starts at the eastern end of town. It offers another way to plan time outdoors: the trail is a clearly defined section with its own starting point, while the footpath at Protected Access runs directly along the shore. Check the current construction status of the trail section before setting out.
