The Clearwater County Historical Society Museum is located in the former Shevlin School, a two-story brick building dating from 1911. The school closed in 1991; the History Center opened in 1996. The five years between these dates mark the transition from use as a school to use as a historical center. So in Shevlin, it is not just a construction date that matters: the building itself was first a school and is now home to the museum.

Schoolhouses from Different Eras

The Log Schoolhouse broadens this historical perspective. It was built in Popple Township in the winter of 1889–1890 and is among the buildings on the History Center grounds in Shevlin. The Vern School marks a later point in time: the five-room schoolhouse was built by the WPA in 1933 and later donated to the History Center. Between them is the former Shevlin School, dating from 1911. Together, the dates of these three schoolhouses span the period from 1889–1890 to 1933. This makes it clear that school history cannot be reduced to a single building or construction date.

The exhibits also have their own rhythm: they are changed every 12 to 18 months at the History Center. This sets the schoolhouses, each with a specific date, apart from the changing exhibition topics. If a particular topic is important to your travel plans, keep this schedule in mind when planning your visit.

Depot, Post Office, and Cultural Collections

At the Ebro Depot, the focus is on its construction history. It was built as a permanent structure before 1924, but was originally intended to be transported on a railroad flatcar. The Ebro Post Office, established in 1898, is located inside the depot. These two details shed light on different aspects: the structure’s intended transportation and the post office’s history.

The Emmanuel Church Replica displays original pews, an altar, a pulpit, and a baptismal font from the church it represents. Its special significance lies in the interplay between replica and original furnishings: the replica represents the church, while the items on display come from the church depicted.

The Military Exhibit complements the stories of individual buildings with artifacts dating from the American Civil War to the present. While the schoolhouses and depot are linked to specific construction dates, this collection spans several eras.

Everyday History and More to Explore

The red barn features a variety of exhibits year-round, including displays on dairy farming, sewing, and home life. The Bus Garage focuses on agricultural and domestic artifacts, including tools used in logging, farming, and household work. Both areas explore everyday life but have different emphases: the barn features exhibits on selected topics, while the garage also displays specific tools.

The History Center also includes a small historic village. Another facility is the museum’s lending library, which offers free books for all ages. Together, the village and library complement the historic buildings and exhibits with two distinct offerings.
