In Van Buren County, trails and shorelines reveal the region’s many sides. Van Buren State Park sits on the shore of Lake Michigan and features high dunes, a sandy beach, and wooded trails. More distinctive landscapes can be found at Porter Legacy Dunes: This 48-acre nature preserve includes a 120-foot-tall wooded dune, a section of Dyckman Creek, and habitat for migratory birds. At the state park, the beach and wooded trails shape the landscape; at Porter Legacy Dunes, the creek and bird habitat add further variety.

Van Buren State Park also has a campground and a buoy-marked swimming area. Both facilities operate seasonally and are subject to park conditions. Shoreline conditions can change with the seasons, so it’s best to check them before a visit.

Trails with Different Features

Trail length, surface, and intended use can help you compare options. The Van Buren State Park Spur Trail is a 4-mile paved path from the park to the town of South Haven. Weather and maintenance may affect access. At 33.5 miles, the Kal-Haven Trail State Park is longer than the 14-mile Van Buren Trail State Park and the Spur Trail. It follows a former railroad corridor between Kalamazoo and South Haven as a bike trail, with a limestone and cinder surface.

The Kal-Haven Heritage Trail project includes 31 interpretive signs and an accessible mobile app about the region’s natural and cultural history. Check in advance whether the app is available. The Van Buren Trail State Park is a multi-use trail through open farmland, blueberry fields, dense brush, and wooded areas. Its surfaces also give it a distinct profile: a 2-mile paved section is intended for bicycles, while a 12-mile undeveloped gravel section is better suited to mountain bikes. Surfaces may change during improvement work. In addition, a 12-mile section between 16th Avenue and Hartford is open to horseback riding; use rules and seasonal conditions may change.

Fish Hatchery and Regional History

At the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center, the renovated exhibit hall explains the development of Michigan’s fish hatcheries and the history of fish stocking. An observation platform overlooks a display pond with fish. Whether fish can be seen there varies by season and conditions.

The museums also focus on different aspects of history. The Bloomingdale Depot Museum is temporarily closed. Its exhibits feature artifacts related to the oil, railroad, and lumber industries, as well as the local heritage of the Bloomingdale area. The museum also has a history room, historic toy trains, a model railroad exhibit, and a telegraph exhibit. The Van Buren County Historical Museum is housed in the county’s historic poorhouse, built in 1884. The building is listed on the state register of historic places; historical objects are displayed across four floors.

Seasonal Experiences and Local Products

There are also several activities to enjoy in winter: Van Buren State Park and the Kal-Haven Trail are recommended for cross-country skiing, while Timber Ridge Ski Resort offers downhill skiing. Check current operating, trail, and weather conditions before your visit.

Farmers markets, fresh produce, apple cider, and jams are also part of what Van Buren County has to offer. Seasonal U-pick options include blueberries, raspberries, corn, and pumpkins; selection and availability depend on the harvest and weather. Numerous festivals and events take place throughout the year. Dates and programs for individual events change annually, so it’s worth checking the event details before your trip.
