Near the city center, the St. Joseph River, the Portage River and the Rocky River converge. There are also twelve areas designated as city parks, cultural institutions and a seasonal market. This gives you a choice of different themes to plan around: parks, history, art or a visit to the Huss Project Farmer's Market.

City Parks and a Memorial in a Green Setting

The city parks are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Check city notices before your trip. A total of seven park shelters can be rented in the three main parks in the downtown area—Scidmore, Memory Isle and Conservation. This means the park guide includes both several designated park areas and specific locations in the downtown area.

Bowman Memorial Park is home to the Civil War Memorial Statue. It is dedicated to the soldiers of the Michigan 11th and to everyone who fought in the Civil War. The memorial adds a distinct historical note to the themes you can explore in Three Rivers.

County History and Art

The St. Joseph County Historical Society is located in Three Rivers and welcomes everyone interested in the history of the county. The Carnegie Center for the Arts offers another historical connection: the building was completed in 1904 and funded by Andrew Carnegie. It was originally the public library of Three Rivers.

Today, the Carnegie Center for the Arts promotes appreciation of the visual, literary and performing arts. It does so through exhibitions, performances and participatory programs. Art lovers can find a range of cultural programming here, while the Historical Society focuses specifically on county history.

Downtown and the Seasonal Market

Downtown Three Rivers is a lively district for art, entertainment and shopping. The Riviera Theatre, a venue with 370 seats, is also downtown. If you want to plan your stay around a specific event, check the date in advance.

The Huss Project Farmer's Market takes place on Saturdays from June through September, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.; check dates and times before your trip. Various vendors sell local fruit and vegetables, syrup, honey, dairy products, meat and baked goods. The selection may vary by market day.

During the market, children can use the Huss Project play area. It includes a mud kitchen, a basketball hoop, a swing, a sandbox, a woodland path and art projects. Check the latest information about the market and play area before your visit.

Planning Your Time

How you plan your time depends on what you want to focus on: the city parks are open daily, while the Farmer's Market is seasonal and limited to Saturdays. A visit to the Riviera Theatre, on the other hand, depends on the date of the event you want to attend. These different schedules can help you choose which days to visit.
