Port Huron offers several distinct ways to explore: the history of Thomas Edison, maritime technology, and different routes along the water. The St. Clair River shapes part of the landscape described here; paved walking paths, a designated water trail, and a 54-mile trail system each offer a different scale. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: cultural history, the riverfront, or longer outdoor trails.

Waterfront Trails with Different Views

The Blue Water River Walk is a paved path in downtown Port Huron along the restored banks of the St. Clair River. Its restored wetlands provide habitat for spawning fish and other wildlife. This brings the riverfront and wildlife habitats into focus together. The Thomas Edison Parkway is a walking path with wide views of the Blue Water Bridge and boat and cargo ship traffic. The Black River Walk runs west from Heritage Park in downtown along the Black River to the 10th Street Bridge, offering views of sailboats and other watercraft. The Blue Water River Walk, Thomas Edison Parkway, and Black River Walk opened on September 6, 2026. They also differ in what they bring into view: restored riverbanks, the bridge and ship traffic, or the Black River and its watercraft.

Thomas Edison and Maritime Heritage

The Thomas Edison Depot Museum is housed in the historic Fort Gratiot railway depot, built in 1858. Thomas Edison worked there as a news reporter between 1859 and 1863. Edison Explorations programs are available for student groups. They cover the scientific basics of electricity and magnetism and are intended for groups of at least 20 people. If you are planning a visit for a student group, this minimum group size is a factor in choosing the program.

The HURON Lightship was the last lightship in service on the Great Lakes. It is permanently moored at Pine Grove Park in Port Huron. The lightship adds a maritime perspective to the Edison story: the focus here is a watercraft with a distinctive role on the Great Lakes.

Paddling Route and Long Trail System

The Island Loop Route is the first officially designated national water trail in the country in Port Huron. This distinguishes it from the walking paths described here, as it is designed for paddling. Check current conditions and safety requirements before setting out, as they can change.

The Bridge to Bay Trail is a 54-mile paved trail system. It begins at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron and ends at the southern end of Saint Clair County, at a bay on Lake St. Clair. This trail also opened on September 6, 2026. Its length and the endpoints described give it a different scale from the trails in downtown. For your planning, you can distinguish between walking paths with different views, an extensive paved trail system, and a water trail.
